Where to have 15% pulley install done in NY/NJ/CT area??

Hi All.

Looking to find out where I can have the 15% supercharger pulley installation done in the NY/NJ/CT area. Any installers in the area? Or should I try to do it myself?? I'm not a master tech by no means. More like a seasoned DIYer.

Looking at the Minimania's instructions, http://new.minimania.com/ArticleV.cfm?displayID=1682 there's quite a bit of disconnecting and jacking involved in getting access to the SC pulley. Anyone done it themselves?? How long would it take??

Thanks!

If you want a fun drive you can head up to Greasy's Garage in Worcester Mass. Totally worth the trip.

Helix31 Minisports right outside Philadelphia is a great place for work on your MINI.

It's right on the edge of Queens and Brooklyn. 2 blocks from the L train means you can hang at the shop or take a short train ride to Manhattan to kill some time.

No offense to the NYker's out there, but isn't riding the subway unsafe with cash, credit cards and a smart phone?

LOL

I agree. Helix did mine and did a great job. I highly recomend them. I am going back to them for brakes and some other mantainence items. Well worth the drive. You'll be hard pressed to find a mechanic that is more specialized with Mini's than Helix. They are very honest and their rates are very reasonable.

Looks like you have a few choices. I forgot t also mention MachV down here in Sterling Virginia. Although I have not dealt with them yet, I have heard great things about them and they can do pulleys.

You might want to give Swift Performance in Norwich a call. They just did an RMW tuning day. I met the guys there when they did the Dyno tuning for the UCONN FSAE car and they really know there stuff.

I have used both Helix & Tyrol. For any substantial work, Helix's lower rates more than justify the drive to Manayunk (N. Philly). I don't think I'd make the drive just for a pulley, but neither would I take a car into any shop just for a pulley upgrade. Better to wait at least until your belt is due for replacement and/or you have some other maintenance/repairs to lump together.

If you are not local and plan to leave your car overnight or longer, I wouldn't suggest Tyrol because they have no parking space and can be pushy about getting the car off their hands when the work is done. For an out-of-towner, it may be a logistical PITA to pick up the car at their convenience.

I realize that this is technically incorrect, but they are basically at the northeastern end of Brooklyn, just above Bushwick & Cypress Hills. FWIW, I consider it Brooklyn.

Last month I went to Swift Motorsports in Norwich CT. Helix 15% pulley with belt, installed, with tax, $212. I had to drive almost 3 hrs. each way, so they went out of their way to accommodate me. Took less than an hour, with some chatting mixed in. (When you see how much the engine has to be jacked up, you'll change your mind about doing it yourself, not to mention you need a pulley puller and belt tensioner tool.) Swift was great!

im in the same "boat". out of all the mods, the pulley is the one i'm least anxious to try myself. although i think i can after reading all the instruction guides out there, norwich is only 1 hr from me so it might be worth the peace of mind just to have swift do it.

CT shop

OK so the shop here in CT will do it for approx. $90. thats their hourly rate and they said it would only take an hour to do. At that price i think its well worth it to have an expert do it.

make sure you have a pulley puller and a belt tensioner tool. and plan on being there a couple hours. they quoted me an hour to do it but it was more like 4 hrs. of course I didn't have the tensioner tool either so that made it harder for them. They did a great job and did accommodate me for the extra time. they are a knowledgeable group of guys. I will continue to use them for performance upgrades
