Drivetrain Pulley = Ping
Pulley = Ping
Just installed 15% pulley w/ new belt and NGK colder plugs. Now my engine pings under WOT, typically between 2-4k rpm.
When I pulled my old plugs, they were reasonably black which is a sign of running rich, right? Tail pipe builds up black soot fairly quickly as well. Only other mod is one-ball and DDM CAI.
I only use Shell 93 octane. I put about 1/3 can of Seafoam through the gas tank about a day before pulley install. 4 Days after install, sting pings. However, it isn't always consistent. More often than not, there is pinging present but not always. It never pinged before install.
It has also been fairly cold out all week, the high not exceeding 34F and as low as 14F, with an average of mid 20s.
Any ideas? I highly doubt it is the equipment itself, e.g., the pulley. Do I just need larger injectors? Going to get JCW 380's and either JCW flash tune or custom tune down the road.
I didn't think it was supposed to ping/run too lean with just a 15% pulley on stock injectors.
Lastly, no fault codes are present.
Thanks.

Check the plug wires and coil pack.
You don't need any injectors or tuning with a 15% pulley.
The extra boost can put a strain on the ignition system if the parts are slightly worn.

Before throwing parts at the problem, try a couple of tanks of known, good gas, without Seafoam in it. Go to another, high-volume gas station and fill it up with premium. If you are not getting a check engine light, it's most likely the fuel in your car that's causing the ping.
i just installed a 15% pulley, belt, and ngk plugs. i also have a one ball, and dinan CAI. With 91 octane, I ping, but I had a tank of the cheapest gas available, so I am going to go through a couple tanks of good stuff before going with a new coilpack or plugs.
I've got the same set up as you on my 05. Only difference is I upgraded the coil and wires at the same time when I did the pulley swap. Combining Way and Helix advice- I'd try a few tanks of good high octaine gas, then look at the coil and plugs. If the coil is original, I'll bet if you pull the number 2 wire at the coil end, its got rust on it. It cant be getting good spark. Remember, an engine needs three things working together to run efficently- spark, air, and fuel. You have messed with all the delivery of all of them with your combined mods.
