That's a thought. The JCW exhaust. Do they still sell and install those for R53 models???

I have a JCW exhaust and it does have an oscillating drone at highway speeds on 6th gear. Not loud at all, but annoying on long trips. May be exacerbated by the General Exclaim UHP tires which I don't like one bit.

That is interesting. I've had a JCW on mine for 4 years & it does not drone at all. I've had tires that have droned. I think your thoughts on the General UHP tires may have hit the nail on the head.

Perucho,
Do you have any other mods done? Header? Cam? Catalytic Converter removed? Just curious why yours drones in 6th gear.

Stock other than the JCW bits and pieces (I guess those are stock-ish too).
I can hear this oscillating frequency that gets annoying pretty quickly. It's not that loud, and the stereo will drown it quickly. Still annoying that a semi-stock exhaust system that's fairly quiet would have this drone. However, it may very well be the tires. I'll report back when I change tires

If it's pleasant my friend, I wouldn't call it a drone.

The exhaust note drone I'm referring to gets trapped in the cabin with you at highway cruising speeds. It resonates from the mufflers and the sound waves are reflected off the ground and back into the cabin with you, then off the roof of the cabin, through the floor and back off the ground again. It will give headaches after a while and cause you to make "chewing" faces in an attempt to (hopefully) clear you ears and relieve your head. Yeah, it's bad!

If the sound you hear is pleasing, most likely it is NOT the dreaded drown. Here is an example of what people do to avoid it. It's pretty bad...

Don't get me wrong. I love performance, power, handling, braking, etc. But there are times when I'd like to hear my stereo, or chat with a passenger in my car without shouting.

You might be right. Perhaps I need to attend the next MINI get together and ask a fellow MINI owner (with an aftermarket-equipped exhaust) to take me for a ride.

Are they necessarily mutually exclusive?

(And yes, that *is* a dancing banana playing bagpipes.)

I'm in Westchester, NY. About 45 miles North of NYC.

What is this "one ball" exhaust mod? It that also removing the resonator, but from the stock exhaust?? I wonder if it drones too??

Got it! Thanks for finding this and attaching! I could probably print out this page and take it over to the local muffler shop and tell them, "here, I want you to do this!".

the Alta performs really good and its single sided so its quite a bit lighter then stock.

base dyno with 15% then a Alta exhaust added to it.. pretty decent gains

Power gains and lighter weight are always great attributes for an exhaust system. However I'd still love to know which one of these great performing catback exhaust systems DRONES the LEAST.

Borla?
JCW?
Supersprint?
'One Ball'?
Milltek?
Quicksilver?

Obviously the stock setup with the resonator & muffler setup does NOT DRONE at highway cruising RPM's......

The top three that drones the least is the One Ball, JCW, then the Supersprint.

Hmmm. Thanks for that! I do remember someone suggesting that I do the one ball first, then try an aftermarket afterward. Ok, dumb question. Where would I find the JCW exhaust system? MINImotoringgear.com ???

The Milltek does not drone.
Look for used JCW exhausts in the NAM Marketplace.
