Drivetrain newbie intake question
Forced induction refers to the way air flows into the engine in turbo and super charged cars.
Cold Air Intake (CAI) refers to an air intake system that pulls air from outside of the engine bay. For example, the R56 (turbo) comes with a cold air intake that pulls air from the front of the car.
Regular intakes pull in air from the engine bay.
Cold air intakes are better for those with turbo and super charged cars because colder air = better flow of fuel.

Remember these are fuel injected cars. There is no "scoop" that will force feed air that will make a difference.
Cooler air definitely helps. If you do a search, you'll find there are a few of the more popular cold air intakes out there but if you dig further, you'll find that stock with a good aftermarket filter works very well.

Actually, the main reason for cold air intakes is that cooler air is denser than hotter air. For the same reason, many supercharged and turbocharged cars (like MINIs) are fitted with intercoolers to cool the pressurized air before sending it to the cylinders. It just provides a more burnable charge to the combustion chambers thanks to a better concentration of oxygen.
