Drivetrain Pulley replacement question
Rent the tool for the $50 or so bucks, and save yourself the headache. I rented mine from DetroitTuned.com and it worked beautifully !!
You dont have much room to work with once the motor is in position, and the dedicated pulley pullers take zero room, plus you get a good grip on the pulley without much chance in damaging the snout on the s/c.

i'm trying out a regular gear puller tool this evening, and made a pot about this at almost the same time as you... so far everyone says the same thing: "rent the tool". which i am now rebelling against. I'll post on how it goes
no offense to the vendors(i've got a free tool rental from way if this doesnt work), but I think the mini community needs to know... can it be done without magic special tools?... i really dont think its that much of a "special application"...
This has been hashed out before and is nothing new. Of course you can use a standard puller. The problem you will face is that the frame will be in the way if you leave the SC on the car. However, if you remove the SC you can do it that way. Other people have cut the pulley off as well. This is nothing new... That being said, the easiest way is to leave the SC in and use a puller that was designed for the job. Having done about 50 pulleys I can tell you that it is worth getting a proper puller to do it.

seriously
ive done it before
with the supercharger installed ! you just need to lift the engine high enough
but the sc pulley removal tool should always be the first choice !
it can be done with a simple 3 arm puller... but sometimes ( especially if the car is older ) the pulley wont budge with a 3 arm puller...
I should add this... Jack that SC shaft up and you will regret not spending the few bucks for the puller. New super chargers are not cheap and parts are rare.

As mentioned above, I have cut one off. It is not fun at all!!!!! In my case it was a late model 06 and the pulley felt like it was welded on.
daflake, thanks for chiming in, i'm glad to finally hear from someone who has done the job more than once. guess i'll find out how much room there is once i get to that point tonight, from the photos ive seen a two prong puller should fit and do the job... maybe i'm wrong, but I've got a hacksaw as a last resort
edit, just saw the dye grinder, that's probably a better idea... nice

i also want to add that if the engine needs to be jacked up anyhow and the tensioner removed(so i can put the stop on it) also, , , I dont anticipate and issues getting the puller on there with room to crank it.

i know theres a bolt included with the special tool i'm so daftly avoiding

ok, welp, i've got a bent up sc pulley and a non-working car at the moment, will post the video tomorrow morning and start lookinf for the fastest tool available(needs to be alta style bolt around as i've damage the pulley)... any advice for getting a tool ASAP in San Diego, CA??? dont seem to have a whole lot of places in CA for miniparts...
Sounds like it is time to cut if off...............
The pulley puller is a CNC machined negative of the pulley....
so it is very unlikely you can unbend it.....
Some pullers only use half the pulley or so....so you still might get lucky....
Hate to say the obvious....if the universal tools worked, specialized tools would never had been made....gen1 Mini's have been getting pulleys for the better part of a decade....and using the "universal pulley puller" has NEVER turned out well. Just remember, the shaft itself is connected to oil seals, gears, etc, so try not to beat on the pulley too much...or you might need an overhauled SC....they start at about $800+, plus the down time and labor to remove+reinstall, and the time to wait for the overhaul....
You might want to consider getting the car towed to someplace that will fix "basket cases" or have a guy who is VERY hand with tools and grinders come over to help you out....a few $$, and maybe a case of beer might do the trick (cheaper than the tow maybe).
