Wait let me go back a few steps.

Did you remove the rockers from the rails? Or did you pick them up as one unit and leave them on the rail?

If you removed them from the rail and then put them back on with the rail flipped then maybe you blocked some oil ports?

I can't see well enough to tell - the rockers look dry, more dry than they should be. No oil should be spray from 1 bolt - oil pressure is lost to the rockers. There is a mismatch - either a bolt length, upside down rocker shaft, cam retainer cap, etc.... bottom line - the problem is in the assembly. The noise sounds like all the rockers.

I can see, from the vid, when the car was started, there appears to be an area of oil center IC that should not be there.

You can take everything appart without removing the cam gear

Ok well I am going to take it apart tonight and reasemble it. I took the entire rail off with the rockers on them. BTW Steve that oil you might be talking about center with the IC is probably the oil that is spraying from the bolt. If you are talking about whats on the IC its just the coil pack.

1. All the rocker rail bolts are the same right?
2. How do I tell if I put the rocker shaft upside down?
3. Which way are the cam retainer caps supposed to go. When I took them off I noticed there was a little cut out at the bottom of them but was only on one side. Does that cut out face the back or the front of the engine.

I believe all the rail bolts are the same size.
If you never removed the rockers from the rails then it's hard to mess this up. I don't even remove the bolts. If you removed the bolts then there is a chance you rotated the rail 180*. The rails have flat spots where the bolts go through and those should be facing upward so the bolt head sets in those flat spots. The intake side rail has notches that clear the spark plug tubes.

You can only put the cam bearing caps on one way and it looks like you have them in the right place, ..1-5 left to right.

@onasled- Thanks for the info!! I think I might have put the rails on upside down... Actually I am looking at the one picture and I can see that I have put the one rail on upside down! The rounded part is at the top. I am going to go out of the loop here and say that IS what is causing the noise.

Also Should the numbers on the cam bearing caps be upside down when I am looking at them from the front of the car?

I'm glad you're making headway!

The caps can only go on one way. One side is bigger than the other so if it's bolted up, you have it right.

I'm guessing since it was installed upside down and leaking, you weren't getting enough pressure to the lifters.

Now go fix it!

Yes, the numbers are upside down on the caps. As I say they only fit one way so it's impossible to mess that up if the cam is installed.

Hope Steve is the big winner here as that would be an easy fix.

Good news and bad news!

The good news is that the noise has stopped and everything is running smoothly!!!!

The bad news is there is some smoke coming from the engine. I think it is because of the oil that had splashed ALL over the engine from when I ran it with the valve cover off. It looks like it is coming from the heat shield covering the 4 tubes (header) leading into the head.

BTW I did an oil change right after I changed the rail around because of the oil I had lost from running with the valve cover off.

Glad you figured it out. I wouldn't worry about the burning oil, it's most likely what you said. Give it some time to burn off.

I'd just like to thank everyone who has helped me out on this. Obviously I was the idiot and put the rail on upside down, but you guys helped me to figure it out. I wish I could buy everyone some wings and beer for helping me lol.

However let this be a lesson learned and I hope people who are thinking of doing a cam swap read this and don't do the same thing I did!

Thanks again guys!

If you get a chance, go to the car wash & wash the engine room - It takes a long time to rid the smell from the interior. Tape & bag the ecu 1st.....

In the mean time, make a couple of ICE COLD, big letters needed, Margaritas... sit on the veranda & enjoy - you earned it

Oh don't worry I bought a 12 pack for tonight.

I actually don't have any smell in the interior and I believe it is done smoking now. I am very excited now! However I do have some major cleaning to do in the engine compartment. I did already spray under the engine with a hose.

Thanks again!

PS. Now its time for a RMW tune!!!

Glad you worked it out! This thread will help me remember not to make the same mistakes you did, lol. Time for me to call Jan and order my cam and injectors.

Wish me luck!

Omg the power is just amazing. I know you wont be disappointed! All I can say is I love 2nd and 3rd gear more than ever.

I think with doing all this work this week I could probably swap a cam in under an hour and a half.

Good luck and let us know how you like it!
