Drivetrain my oil catch can recommendation
my oil catch can recommendation
I ran my car with homedepot-built ($20) occ for a while, and i got tired of draining the oil so often due to small housing.
so I looked around for oil catch cans, specifically with metal housing and internal filter, but most importantly the quality had to be good and also affordable
I first looked at M7's and although they look great, the price is very steep ($129 listed) and even at that price, they lack internal filtering device, so you have to somehow figure out a way to collect the oil vapor when it goes into the can.
So after days of searching online, I stumbled into Simota OCC.

First off, it's very affordable for what it is. Aluminum ones sell for $65 bucks. and it has internal filter (mesh) to properly collect oil vapors. And judging by my shipment today, the quality is very very good and sturdy. Even the nipples are aluminum.
All you need to buy is some fuel lines (5-10 bucks at the most) and you have a proper catchcan for $50+ less than M7's.
And I have to say their customer service is top notch too. when requested extra nipple for the can, they responded immediately and shipped it the very next day.
Hope this saves some time for people looking what to get.

all aluminum.

you can see the filter element inside the can.

I know this isn't perfect but i am suprised at how strong the velcro is holding up the can. it's literally rock solid.
but i am going to find some L brackets and so on in the future if it fails to secure it.

how I route it.

and to answer your questions, I lost one of the nipples while i was checking things out.
and the drain is at the bottom center of the can. you have to use a hex screw to unbolt it and drain it out

it came with all the mounting hardware and the blue hose but I just got lazy with figuring out how to mount it using the hardware. as you know this is a universal oil catch can so there is no instruction on how and where to mount it.

i just went with the red one because i have red strut mount guards.
Looks great! And it seems like a steal! I was going to do the Home Depot OCC but I went to Lowe's and they had one twice the size! It was like 20 bucks and it has a metal casing on it. Works great but I like the one you hav a lot! I would make that bracket asap! There is a lot of vibration under that bonnet! I originally had a turn valve on it to let the oil drip out but I put a cap on it since the metal casing screws into the top so it's very easy to change! I might check out the one you have, how is it holding up? Catching a good amount of oil? Do you have to take it out to drain the oil? (figured that's why you used velcro?) thanks for the reccomendation!

It's been about 1000 miles and it's catching oil really good.
I think it works even better than the diy-ed occ. I wasn't catching this amount w/ previous one.
Also the mount is holding up nicely. no problem here!

I have to get one ASAP. I have 13k on my '05....would you recommend cleaning out the intercooler and intake?
I would definitely clean the intercooler to give it a good fresh start.
And it's really easy to do: just put the intercooler vertically over a bucket and spray bunch of brake cleaner inside and let it drain and dry for 30 mins or so.
I clean the intake filter every 15-20k miles or so

Not really. Only place I can think of is the intercooler and the rubber couplers on both sides.

Anyone out there use the Steeda oil separator?

Or, even using a stock BMW part?

that steeda one looks exactly like the ones that home depot sells. which sells for 20-30 dollars. I'm not sure why steeda doubled their price.
Replace the fuel line you used w/ the blue line supplied. The fuel line, especially once soaked w/ oil, will collapse under suction. That Simota is good looking piece, especially considering the price.
