New Intake!

Well, the previous owner of my car had an Alta CAI with the stock intake tube, the heat shield, and the foam filter. I have NEVER had luck with foam filters for some reason, they always seem to shred apart and get sucked into my throttle body! I ended up buying a pod filter off ebay that came with a 2.5" inlet polished black tube. And it was only like 25 bucks! I cut the heat shield so I can fit my new filter in there and it looks, sounds and performs GREAT! Check it out!

EDIT: NEW PICTURES DOWN AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE WITH THE FIXED AIRBOX!!

Looks good! I replaced the Alta foam filter as well. Went with a cone filter but just attached it to the Alta box.

Is that a K&N cone or something similar?

I also noticed that your Modular Front End is painted red. Either someone was very dedicated to removing it for paint, or had the idea after a minor crash necessitated it's replacement.

Actually, it's an eBay filter kit that I got for like $25 bucks! And I didn't take it off, I just taped up some newspaper and sprayed it red!! Turned out bomb!

What cleaner were you using? I think you might be using K&N cleaner as it has this exact effect on foam filters. Use Uni Foam filter cleaner kits are you're good to go!

That's what I use, the Uni cleaner, I also use it on my Kawasaki and same thing! But I live like right next to the water, not sure if that makes a difference. Just always had problems with them falling apart so I figured I'd just go with a pod! Thanks though!

Nice job. Clean install. Clean set up for the spray on the I/C also.

An unrelated hint...

take the spark plug wires at the rear of the coil and point the boots to the driver side, then you can run the wires next to the coil by the oil filler cap. If you're worried bout shorts between them, you can get wire spacers (the stock wires are routed that way and use one wire spacer). It will clean up the wire routing a bit.

Those plug boots have lots of tension on them like that....

The wires I purchased from Waymotor Works came with a loom for that side.

You realize this is a HAI, not a CAI? By cutting so much of the front of the Alta box away, you are allowing almost all the engine bay heat into the airbox. Have you taken temperature measurements in the airbox? (Actually, on second thought, don't.)
How is the water spray activated?

Thanks for the tips on the wires, I will check it out when I get to the house later. On the intake, I only cut enough out for the pipe to fit through. Think it will effect the performance of it with that little of a cut out? Should I fabricate it a little more to be closed off? And the water injectors are activated by the rear window washer switch, I am using that pump and resivor to spray the intercooler, cools it down a good bit, you can watch the temp drop!

Doc is right, probably too much material removed to accept the intake tube. I would fabricate a front panel to that box, and a collar. Would probably have to pop rivet the collar to the front panel. Then in the collar area for the tube put in some foam weather strip that has tape on the back to keep a good tight fit around that tube but enough room for engine flex/movement.

Alright, just went to Lowe's and picked up a piece of sheet metal and some weather stripping. Already made my templet, just going to cut it so only the 2.5" tube fits through with weather stripping around the cut. Simple, easy to do, and should suffice!

Sounds like that will do the trick GL It really gets insanely hot under there near the expansion tank and above the heatshield area just below the tank.

Alight! Here are the new pics, Looks like it will work perfect! Also, I have enough sheet metal left, should I make a top for the intake box or would I loose airflow? I noticed some of the CAI's come with a top.

Now does it meet CAI Requirements??!?

Top or no top? Is it better or worst? I have some spare plexiglass left from when I built my box, was planning on using it as a cover. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

A top wouldnt hurt. It would definitely help pull more cold air than hot.
