HIGH water/IA temps!!

Just had a head/cam/injectors installed this past weekend and I'm now experiencing CRAZY HIGH water/intake air temps.

So the car seems to be running fine when being driven at high speeds, however, when either stopped or going very slow the engine will heat up very quickly. I’ve seen my water temps hit upwards of 115 degrees Celsius (249F) and my intake air temps hit upwards of 75 degrees Celsius (167F). These temps were still this high in Canada where it’s just above freezing outside. I didn’t hear the fans kicking in at all so while it could be a fan issue for the water temps, what could be the issue for the intake air temps? The temps for both water and air were fine before the install (ie: with the fans still not working properly).
Also, I recorded a video that I’ll send you when I get home showing weird behavior in the boost lines when at constant throttle (just holding the peddle the same spot, not accelerating, not decelerating) going 100mph. The gauge was showing the boost go from 5-10 VERY quickly back and forth while holding steady ONLY at 100mph. While this happens the car still runs fine but there’s definitely something going on in the vac lines at 100mph. The video will show you what I’m talking about.

Anyways, my big worry is the temps.. I don’t want to break my new parts because of this. Let me know what you think could be the problem and I’ll try and fix it myself.

Thanks

Did you top up and bleed out your cooling system after the head install?

Did you do a Tune with all those mods also? If not, you may want to consider one to be matched up with the mods. Good luck....

I"m with jhiggs on this one..

these are typical symptoms of needing to bleed the cooling system. Start with this, and also test to see if the radiator fan will run. The change in boost levels at certain light loads sounds like the bypass valve oscillating. why I'm not sure, but mine has been hooked up like the VGS for 70k+ miles. I always thought that the way it came from the factory would lead to pressure oscillations, but never had seen any data.

I was thinking air bubbles, and possibly a lose conection. Re check your wiring and do a full coolent flush, both are cheap and easy. Water weter also works to some extent, might want to pick a bottle up.

thanks for the replies guys! when i get a chance i'll check to make sure the fans are working.

Any how-tos on how to properly bleed the coolant lines?

well, the extra heat in the engine bay is whats causing the high IA temps. fix the water temp problem, and itll fix your other problem as well. if you have no fans running, check to see if they work, need new fuses and resistors, etc. also check your thermostat, and bleed and top your coolant system. good luck.

There are two bleed locations....

the obvious one in the radiator hose at the front of the engine, and a not so obvious one back by the thermostat housing. It's been a while for me, so I don't remember exactly where.

I like water wetter too.

Sounds like either your thermostat is pooched, or your cooling system is not properly bled, did you also check for coolant leaks?

This all happened right after head work....

if the thermostat caused the car to overheat at idle, it would really heat up at speed! I'm guessing it's not the t-stat.
