Injectors: how big is too big?

OK, I'm planning some upgrades for my 05 MCS, and I'm looking to add higher flow injectors. I see a lot of different sizes available. How big is too big?

380cc?
440cc?
450cc?

All I'm planning is a CAI, 15% pulley, colder plugs, and an dyno tune. So I probably only need 380cc injectors. But would larger ones be harmful?

Anyone have any experience with this ebay vendor? Fiveomotorsport

I run 550cc injectors! Of course, I got my car tuned by Mynes to run them, along with all the other mods I have.
If you don't have a bigger valve head and/or cam, there's little to be gained from anything larger than the JCW (380cc) injectors. Also, if you get the JCW injectors, you can get the dealer to flash the ECU with the JCW maps.
I might have some JCW injectors lying about...

Those are re-drilled injectors...there are a thread somewhere around here... Too good to be true $$ cause they are...those "blanks" they say they buy are actually smaller non-us market injectors that are used overseas. Thet are then drilled...and sold.
The spray pattern in NOT the specfic dual-cone oem spray, and most redrilled units are terrible when it comes to atmozation... So performance will suffer....
A few folks may have gotten luckey....but IMO just get the JCW's...they will work the first time, no tune. Then a tune or jcw flash will help them run better. If you had more mods, the getting the Boosh or Simens (symiens?..same as the oem) injectors with the correct spray pattern would an option.
Unless you want the chance of a lot of grief over trying to save $ (and maybe a rebuilt motor), just get the jcw's (WayMototWorks has some new on sale) or the oem spraypattern ones from JAN at RMW or Helix.

Which injectors are you saying are redrilled? The 550cc injectors are Bosch OE injectors are $300 for a set of 4 from Mynes and are not redrilled.

Ugh. See, now I'm confused again. LOL

Some say FiveO ones are drilled, some say they are not.

They're so darn tempting at $240 for a set.

$500+ for OEM JCW ones is too much. The WayMotorWorks sale price is better at $400 but that's still a lot more than the $240.

I emailed FiveO to see if they are drilled or not and if they are dual cone spray pattern or not. We'll see if he responds.

DrPhil:
If you've got a set of used OEM JCW injectors lying about, let me know how much you want for them and approx. how many miles you've got on them. I'm very interested!!

They previously said they were laser drilled from blanks.....an "injectory guy" on this site that works in the indrustry looked up the color of the nozelels (the factory color codes them...to make them easy to identify), and found they were non us market re-manfacture/drilled/laser cut (same thing..non factory) injectors. Check with helix....he also a a good movie clip on his site of the difference between the correct sprat pattern, and re-drilled. He has done much research.....and found cheaper alternatives, as have rmw.
I found new, still in the box jcw's a year ago from a retail/Internet mini specialist for $299 last year...they do pop up cheap if you keep your eyes open....

We are talking about the injectors from 5-oh or whatever in the e-bay link....there was a long thread on this...with a few problems a year or so ago...when I am on a computer instead of a handheld thinggy I'll do a quick search...I'm sure someone else could too!!

Thanks Zippy. I found this post, which is the one I think you were talking about:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...959-post3.html

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Too bad the other ebay retailer in that other thread doesn't seem to be around anymore.

From his post (https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-your-mcs.html)

It appears Mike@Mynes sells good Bosch 550cc injectors for $300 a set. But the poster has been banned, and I can't find a web site for him. can anyone clue me in? Why was he banned? Was he full of crap? Is he still in business?

My 550s were supplied by Mynes, and they look like the ones on that post you linked to (the OE 6-hole ones). I've never had a problem with the injectors, btw.
As for Mike's fate on NAM--that's history. He moved his shop from Phoenix to southern CA. He's still in business afaik.

They are still around and you will find them active on the other mini sites like motoringalliance and minitorque.
There is a good link about injectors on MA under vendor products

The Mynes crew are no longer a "vendor" on NAM - they got sick of all the BS that goes on NAM so don't use the site.
However there are many happy mynes customers

Finally a word of warning... some vendors actually remove the part number from the injectors they sell so you have no way of actually knowing what size injectors you get.
A guy I know actually got a set off this vendor and when he had them tested they were not the size he was told

If you are not getting a tune to scale the 550's correctly go with the 380's

It depends if you ever plan on upgrading the head. If you are then I would go bigger than 380, if not then 380 is good.

Do you care to elaborate who the vendor was with the injectors with the numbers ground off and what size they really were.

I'd go with the 380s (and I will look for them tonight when I get home from work.) All larger injectors need to be scaled, and that can only be done by a tuner - usually while getting the car dynotuned. Most people who get bigger injectors do so at the actual tune, so they don't even have to drive to the place and hence avoid any problems with non-scaled units.

Stock injectors are good for a 15% pulley, CAI, and tune. If you go 17% or higher, or some other crazy combination, 380cc injectors should be good.

To give you a comparison... stock injectors are 330cc, which is about 31.42 lbs/hr. That's good for about 200 HP. Go here to see a calculator: http://www.witchhunter.com/injectorcalc1.php4. Go here if you want to do some extra calculations: http://www.gtsparkplugs.com/InjectorSizeCalc.html.

In the motorhead world, 30 lb. injectors are good for up to 400 HP. Stock Z28 Camaros only had 24 lb. injectors in the LT1 days of the early-mid 90s. Later '98-'02 LS1 Camaro injectors are 26-28 lbs/hr.

Thanks Dr.Phil!

I am getting all of this stuff installed at Helix during their dyno tuning event in about 2 weeks. So I'm sure Jan at RMW could properly scale my tune for the 550's. I'm not currently planning to upgrade further than what I've listed, but heck, I didn't plan on turning my Crossfire into a 425hp drag car running 12.5's either. LOL

I'd like to leave the door open for future mods, which the 550's would do. But if Dr.Phil has a set of 380's lying about, I will take them and save some money.

Hey Jack, I think your numbers are off. The 330cc injectors are already peaked at 80% duty cycle for the stock Mini Cooper S (168 hp). So adding more power would require more flow if you want to stay in the 80% duty cycle.

Pumping the motor up to 200hp and the 380cc injectors are well over the 80% duty cycle. In fact the web site calculator you linked shows that to remain at 80% you'd need 394cc injectors.

OK, I did not calculate that far into it. I do realize I'm comparing two different beasts of sorts (i.e. domestic vs. MINI). My point of reference comes from this article: http://www.europeancarweb.com/projec...ect/index.html. Part 5 shows the upgrades; part 6 shows the tuning. Their dyno testing showed their modded MINI dumping fatter than 10:1 A/F ratio at WOT. That tells me that, combining tuning with stock injectors, there is room to grow. You can lean out boostfed engines to 11:5 or even 12:1 without overheating.

The calculators are not an exact science, but rather an estimate. Only tuning on the dyno can really dictate how far you can go with the injectors and the mods.

Injectors are too big when the pulse width you are sending them at idle no longer causes them to open all the way or in a fully controlled manner.

how difficult is it to get a dealer to flash a car to the JCW software once you install 380 injectors?

And are they even necessary for a catback, headers, intake, and 15% pulley?

If you can make it to Mynes in So Cal, I would do the 550cc ones. I have some friends that already did this and their car runs awesome, tons of power and BETTER gas mileage. Yes you read that right.

I have an appt on April 2nd to get my NS1 cam, 550c injectors, Mynes tune, M7 16% Pulley, GP intercooler and some dyno time. Can't wait until this car is in Mikes hands and getting worked over for the better.

DRIVEN1,

The computer in MINIs is designed to attempt to maintain a 14.7:1 A/F ratio up to 80% pedal, at which time it goes into WOT mode. Your improved gas mileage may be due to the injectors being new. The old ones could have had a small amount of deposits in them.

I just bought my 2006 MCS in December. I considered the MPG a bit low, so I ran an STP fuel injector cleaner through a tank of gas. Mileage improved by about 2 MPG. From there, I will continue to use an STP gas treatment about every 3,000 miles to keep the system cleaned and optimized.
