how much tranny fluid...

i'm getting the LSD moan on my 05 MCS at low speeds. my research and a conversation with a local tech tells me to change the tranny fluid. so i'm doing that...and it all drained quite well, but i can only get a little over a quart back in the tranny...seems like that's not enough, so i'm wondering if i drained it correctly. i cracked the fill bolt, then removed the drain bolt, then removed the fill bolt and just let it drain...so it should be empty right?

anyone know for sure?

This DIY link recommends 1.75 quarts or until the fluid flows out the fill port.

And I'm pretty sure the benley manual calls for 1.4 qts during a change.

Thanks for the DIY... I'm adding it to my newb thread!

yeah, i guess i didn't have it completely level, so maybe that's the difference...anyhow, the LSD moan i was trying to get rid of is gone. yeah.

oh, and on the DIY, if you have an LSD you are supposed to go drive in circles at full lock, 10 times left, 10 time right...i looked pretty stupid in my cul-du-sac doing this, but oh well. i was told to do this by a mini mechanic so i'm hoping he wasn't just pulling my leg.

I was going to comment about making sure the car was level. It looks like that was covered already, and that I did in fact comment about it just now.

is there a LSD friction modifier additive you need to put in as well?? If so where can you pick this up? I went to my local Mini dealer to buy a quart or so of the transmission fluid for a change and they told me its lifetime fluid. I'm not buying that so does Mini sell their fluid in the quarts to the consumer or do you have to go aftermarket?
Thanks,
Steve

i actually emailed redline on this. they said to start with MTL and if you still get any moan or chatter, to add a friction modifier a bit at a time until it goes away. i couldn't find MTL locally and i got impatient so i just went and got some royal purple and it worked fine...no more LSD moan.

on a side note...i love how the fluid is supposed to be "lifetime" but there's s convenience fill and drain plug in the tranny!!! hahaha.
