self tuning options searched and came up empty handed
so I feel as though Ive done at least enough searching to justify my own thread about this.
I'm looking for a tuning option for an r53 preferably a flash program but a plug and play ecu is fine. Unfortunetly all Ive ever found were custom tunes by other people or plug and play flashes. im not interested in a pre maped tune. I want to tune the car my self, im perfectly capable but cant find anything that works.
can anyone point me in the right direction

Nope.....it took the guys $$$$$ to develop the tuneing products in use due the siemens computer in the car. The data is encripted several times and was a huge expense to get into the cars "brain". I would hate to see the liscencing fees that the various tuners must pay. Unfortunatly, unlike Supra's , etc, there are 0 open source tuning programs for the mini, and 0 DIY style kits like on honda's etc.

Not quite...
the Hydro and MoTec stuff can do it, but you have to really be into this to do it. Issues involve the immobilizer and DSC system integration. I've been jonesing to do a MegaSquirt system but the issues still exist with systems integration.
If you're willing to replace most of the car electical systems, you can do it... Otherwise, you're SOL.

Yeah, one possible option is going over to a new ECU. The problem with is that the stock gauges in our car are controlled by the stock ECU. So if you lose the ECU you lose the gauges.
I cant say I am a fan of Squirt. We used a microSquirt on our FSAE car and the thing was nothing but trouble and support was minimal. We decided to go with an Adaptronic E420c this year, and so far the support from the manufacturer has been good and the capabilities of the ECU are extensive. If it wasnt for the fact I would be losing my stock gauges I would really be thinking about the Adaptronic.

It's all CAN stuff
so if whatever you're using has a CAN output, the stock dual gauge cluster could be driven pretty easily. It would take some work, but it's doable. I've found speed, RPM, and steering angle (along with stuff for yaw and the like) on the main CAN bus. I'd have to hack the auxiliary bus to decode all the stuff that makes it to the dual gauge cluster...
Anyway, it's doable, but it's not easy.

Unfortunately, rebuilding an entire MINI's electrical system is not a very viable option for most people........
