Onasled did this with his race car--there is at least one thread about his build, and maybe more. It's not easy--he had to modify the floor pan to get clearance. You're in for a long, costly ride going this route.
But why not? Go for it!
Oh, btw, if you read the thread on battery relocate and straight exhaust (one that I contributed substantially to), you'll figure out that a side exhaust is RACE ONLY. It must be unbelievable loud, given how loud a straight exhaust is on an R53.
You don't even have to believe me--the weight of evidence is unbearable.
Side exhaust work on race cars where sound isn't an issue. Doesn't work very well on a street car. You do need some length in the exhaust system in order to manage sound levels. Sound waves are rather long. Packaging is also an issue as there isn't a lot of room for a proper muffler.
Even race cars have sound issues these days, and the Mini S is always in trouble, especially with side exhaust.
Here is an old vid that gives you an idea of it on a race car. Note that I was already warned I was too loud and that why we put the turndowns on it. Then we had to put a sheet of aluminum over it and that still was too loud.
I run twin pipes, each having the magnaflow straight muffler/resonator. ( at that time I was running this, different now) VIDEO HERE
I believe the black S in the video belongs to AstroblackS. I don't think he comes on here much but you could try send him a message. I have seen his car and it is LOUD for sure. A nice setup but very loud for daily driving.
turn 3 is that real tight rt. hander? very choppy there. good main staight speed considering the short distance . not many slow drivers , i.e. traffic . not a busy day or is this the norm?
That was the qualifying run at that race day. Was a small turnout, maybe 14 cars.
That track is a mess, talk about choppy out of three. What you see there is wheel spin as that is the uphill right that was on that video link I posted above. So that's just me feathering the throttle to try and stop the wheel spin. This Mini is pretty light and lots of power so it does take a bit to drive.
