Fixing run flats

I have a relatively new set of run flats (Dunlop Sport 9000) on my 06" Cooper S, and have a nail in the tread, second row in. I went to the dealer, and had sticker shock! Any info on repair of these tires? I lose about a pound of air a week at this point. Thanks!

Fixing a runflat is no different from fixing a regular tire, all of the same rules apply.

Legally they arn't suppose to repair a runflat. The Manufacture of runflat tires doesn't recommend it. So if something were to happen you could sue them. Plus manufactures want to sell more tires.

Do not fix a runflat! If absolutely necesary you can dismount the tire and install a mushroom style plug from the inside. The dealer would probably decline to do any repair altogether. you run a risk of vibration at the least because the tires are so stiff and the plug's mushroom stem will disrupt your treads. Don't let anyone put a string style plug in the tire.
Your biggest disadvantage will be that small shops willing to repair the tire wont be able to dismount the stiff tire without the right machine and shops with the machine will probably not repair the tire.
at over $200 a tire I scrapped the runflat idea and bought regular pirellis the ride improved, handlings the same and a BMW Mobility tire roadside kit or slime kit with a compressor will get me down the road just fine and for alot less bank. The only drawback is having to clean the wheels if i get a flat.

I had a local tire shop fix a nail in one of mine. I think it was about $15. Ran em till they were bald with no problems.

They did do a patch from the inside.

Illegal? Goodyear and Firestone both list their service centers that are certified to fix runflats. I don't think they could do that unless it were legal. At the very least, they would be opening themselves to huge lawsuits claiming to have certified repair centers if runflats could not be repaired.

I had a plug installed in one of mine after a caught a screw. Cost $30. No problems since.

The easist way to fix a runflat is get rid of them and get real tires.

You should NEVER plug a run flat ever.

Your back and *** will thank you.

+1 My husband has had his repaired several times on his Vette and got over 40,000 trouble free miles on his. He was told that there are instances where the tire cannot be repaired, mainly depending on the location of the damage on the tire.

I just stuck a plug in one of my run-flats. It is holding air and riding just fine.

With that said, I would be hesitant to run it while flat for very long. I'm sure the strength of the carcass has been compromised. For liability reasons, I'm sure the manufactures strictly prohibit it.

I would never track it or run it at 100mph either.

If you want to plug one, you can buy a kit for just a few bucks at the parts store. Only takes a minute to plug a tire.
