M45 ....how long can it last?

this could be a good talking point

feel free to rubbish/amend/improve the following statements, i will start with some wild guesswork just to get a debate rolling

if i smoked 10/20/60 a-day any good doctor could no-doubt tell me how many years, months and days this would knock off my life expectancy

so finger in the air time,

so assume the oem charger and std pully = 100k [helps with the percentages]

whats the life expectancy of your m45 with the other options available

11%

15%

17%

19%

lets try and keep a lid on all the other variables, at least for a while

thanks for the Rotrex infomercial,

but it would be more helpful to find out, what pully, how long, cause of death, gears, coating etc

Oh my god or you could get a rotrex?
Theirs no assignable number to how long your supercharger will last.
it has alot to do with how much of a **** you are when you drive.
You keep the revs up its gonna eat the blower fast.
Depends on things like year of the car. miles
Track days. Driven hard driven easy kept in boost kept out of boost
if you feed chickens to it.
Stuff like that.
theres no real way to say it will last X miles.

Well, it's hard (basically impossible) to equate supercharger speed with service life, because many of them seem to fail as a result of the lubricating oil leaking out, rather than the supercharger itself actually "wearing out", but here goes:

Mechanical stress and wear are generally proportional to the square of the speed of the moving parts. So with all else being equal as far as driving habits, environmental conditions, etcetera, a supercharger being driven 11% faster would wear 23% faster (1.11 times 1.11), giving a service life of about 81k miles.

likewise, 15% reduction pulley = 76k miles service life
17% = 73k miles
19% = 71k miles

But again, these numbers likely have no bearing on reality. If your supercharger fails because the oil leaked out, it probably would have happened in about the same amount of time, regardless of which pulley you're using.

Scott backs it up with the math.
Depends on what you also mean by fail.
they could still run perfect as far as spinning wise but not be as efficent as they could be.

Well math is all well and fine but its just numbers. My mechanic has 135k on his SC, 90k of those with both a 16% and 2% pulleys .

120k before the water pump gear failed

15% pulley added at 45k
2% crank added 50k

So...... I got 191,000 running a 15%.

161,000 w/ the pully

Started making noise so I changed it - probably still had quite a bit of life in it.
