Can anyone tell me what speeds are typically achieveable in each gear for a standard MCS? (if you run it to the redline)

Shouldn't these numbers already be posted somewhere in a road test or something?

I believe 50mph is possible in first.... anyone know more? (or would like to test it out for me? )

Thanks!

Mathematically speaking

[code:1:18571c2b01]
Assuming 6750 rpm redline:

+---+-------------------------------+
| G | COOPER S 6-Speed |
| e | Tire Fitment |
| a +---------------+---------------+
| r | 205/45-17 | 195/55-16 |
+---+---------------+---------------+
| 1 | 42.6 ( 68.6) | 42.9 ( 69.1) |
| 2 | 67.9 (109.2) | 68.4 (110.0) |
| 3 | 90.2 (145.2) | 90.9 (146.3) |
| 4 | 110.5 (177.7) | 111.3 (179.1) |
| 5 | 133.1 (214.2) | 134.1 (215.7) |
| 6 | 135.0 (217.2) | 135.0 (217.2) |
+---+---------------+---------------+

NOTES:

1. Speed shown in mph (kph)
2. Top gear is rev limited

funny you should ask - I asked the same kind of question because when I test drove an MCS, I couldn't see the speedometer and wanted to know how fast I was going! If you do a search on the thread called "How fast was I going" in this folder you'll see a good chart.

The speed and the tach in an MCS are linked together so after a bit of getting used to it you will know roughly where you are without having to try very hard. In 6th gear right around 70 mph is about 2900 rpm.

If all the cars around you going in your direction are whizzing by you going backwards it might be time to check your speedo before you are surrounded by blue lights.

I did check the rough redline limits according to the chart above and found that they were correct. I like 90 mph in 3rd. Tons of fun with an exhaust header, big intake and cat-back exhaust.

On an empty stretch of road in Colorado @ 03:30 I hit 110 in 4th.
Then I freaked out & backed off. Saving further stupidity for the race track.
This was in an '02 bone stock MCS that we had as a trial car to see if we liked it.
Yeah, we liked it.....
That was just about redline in 4th

As posted in a past issue of Road & Track (January 2003)

Gear/Ratio/Overall/(RPM)/Mph

1st,: 1 4.17/11.43/(6600)/ 44
2nd,: 1 2.62/7.18/(6600)/ 70
3rd,: 1 1.33/5.39/(6600)/ 93
4th.: 1 1.09/4.41/(6600)/ 114
5th,: 1 1.33/3.64/est (6450)/ 135*
6th,: 1 1.09/2.99/ est (5300)/ 135*

Final drive ratio 2.74:1, 4.05:1**
Engine @ 60 mph in 6th 2500 rpm

* electronically limited
** for 4th and 5th gears

Hope that answers your questions. As for personal experience, I have only bounced off the rev limiter twice in my MCS, accidentally of course, while driving fast on some curvy roads.

I cut and pasted this to my MINI Stuff document last year:
------------
6-Speed Manual Transmission
Below are maximum speeds in gear calculated for 17" wheels---ADD about 0.6MPH [1.0KPH] for 16" wheels.

Gear_______RPM______ _MPH
1.....................6750...............42.6
2.....................6750...............67.9
3.....................6750...............90.3
4.....................6750..............110.5
5.....................6750..............133.1
6....................(5500).............(135)

((RPM/Gear Ratio) * Wheel Circumference In Feet)*(Minutes Per Hour / Feet Per Mile)
-------------
Looks comparable.

well, the MINI's redline is 6950 as of late MY02 I believe, so here's the updated speed/gear with stock redline and then a ECU'd MINI w/7200rpm redline, with 205/45-17's:

1st gear - 6950rpm = 43.9mph, 7200rpm = 45.5mph
2nd gear - 6950rpm = 69.8mph, 7200rpm = 72.4
3rd gear - 6950rpm = 92.9mph, 7200rpm = 96.3
4th gear - 6950rpm = 113.8mph, 7200rpm = 117.9
5th gear - 6950rpm = 137.2mph, 7200rpm = 142.1
6th gear - 6950rpm = 168.0mph, 7200rpm = 174.0
Reverse - 6950rpm = 45.1mph, 7200rpm = 46.7mph

Now, the stock ECU speed limits at 135MPH on the MCS, and 124MPH with the Cooper. An ECU'd MINI will most likely never reach 174MPH, unless they've got a hell-a-fied amount of horsepower.
