Drivetrain My Gas Mileage Sucks....
02 MINI Cooper "S" with intake, exhaust, pully, etc. Since all the mods I have done on my car my gas mileage is at an all time low. The car is faster then ever but the computer readings are registering a low amount I just cannot figure out why?? Right now it is reading 17.6 mpg with an average speed number of 27.3. I don't know what to do besides go back to service andI already no what they are going to say....Sorry the car is modded and we cannot do anything. Any ideas out there?? This thing is getting the same mileage as my wifes SUV.
1) What kind of SUV does your wife drive.. 17.8 MPG in an SUV sounds high. (unless it's a Rav-4 or a CRV)
2) Where do you usually shift?
3) Do you drive stop and go traffic, or nice suburban roads.
4) Do you have a grin from ear to ear when you're driving?
If I don't shift before 2200 rpms in 1st gear, and before 3000 rpms in any other gear, my MPG is around 20, IF I shift conservatively and drive no faster than 70mph (3100 rpms) I get 26MPG.
Good luck! and let us know how it goes!
How often have you reset your OBC? Do you do it ever time you fill up? If you don't or haven't in some time you may want to try it. It may give you a better reading. Also have you tried manually figuring your mileage? I've heard some of the OBC figures have been wrong.
I don't have the pulley or ECU enhancements on my S, but it gets 30 to 31 on the road. It does drop a fair bit in town because I'm not a conservative driver.

The avg speed of 27mph sounds very nice and your mpg readout seems very wrong. How many miles do you get to a tank? I get about 280 I would say average, and on average I drive "normally" and not hard 95% of the time. On those times where I've been on canyon runs where obviously gas mileage is not of concern, I've still broken 200 miles. If you are sinking your foot into the throttle a bit more than needed, especially just driving around town, stop and go, low rpm's.. it's going to mess everything up. On the freeway, don't get into boost (Cruise!) and your car shouldn't have muhc trouble getting 30mpg+ unless you are cruising over around 80mph, then air drag and gearing aren't helping at all.
I never let my engine run <3000 RPM, except at lights. I typically shift at 5000 RPM to redline. I commute 1 mile to work and the bulk of my driving is mixed city, with a rare highway trip (metro detroit). My average fuel economy is 24.6 MPG. Small engines run efficiently at 3k RPM. I think you need to let it stretch its legs a little.
Nobull60, how often do you reset the MPG indicator? I know you do track days occasionally and they can be really bad on the MPG. So maybe the MPG includes a track day or two. Also be aware that the MPG continues to calculate the MPG even while you're stopped. So if you let it sit and idle a lot more than you used to, then you'll see a lower value.
Thanks for all the feedback. I do reset the OBC everytime I fill up. I do drive it like I stole it cause it just wants to go. So I guess that it may be a bit on the high revs most of the time. Don't get me wrong I do drive normal most of the time but I still get on it 50% of the time. OK maybe 75% of the time but heck. Its just to boring to drive slow in this car. Anyway I do track events monthly but I really think its more of the city lemans style driving that knocks down the mileage. I just read some people getting high 20 and even some 30's/ Just cannot figure out how.???

I did not think I was lugging my engine, but I started keeping the revs in the mid 3000 range and my mileage jumped up. The more I race around, the better the mileage

with intake and pulley the gas mileage could actually get better. I would say that you are either driving really hard or that your computer is no longer working, and you would not be the first. Just reset it while your on the highway going about 70 and it should read at least 30.
In city and around town I get an average of 180 to 200 miles at best with a full tank, I'm never traveling in business hours or stuck in traffic. On mostly highway trips, the best I recorded over one year is not more than 25 mpg (11 l/100km)...
it takes more gas than the infiniti G 20 I owned and not much less than the bm 735 I had before...but it is more fun.
I guess that driving habbits may be responsible for a part of it, nonetheless, this car is hard on gas....

Nobull, do you have your ECU reprogrammed? I've noticed some cars with a reporgrammed ECU run richer and are a bit more "generous" with
fuel. Although 17MPG is pretty low, I mean on a 1.6L?
I find it funny my current car, 2002 Vette 6 speed with a gigantic
5.7L V8, get's 28MPG on the highway @ 75MPH and (driving it carefully) 19MPG
in the city. Tho it only turns 1800RPM at 75. I guess the MCS must have high axle ratios? and trans gearing? Not sure what the cd is on it either, but probably isn't the kindest to the wind. That being said, still ordering one
I plan on an intake, POSSIBLY pulley for my MCS. Hoping I can muster perhaps
30MPG @ 75, at least keep to the low-mid 25 range in the city (I drive quick, but
not too hard)
I've seen some notes on MINI2 about these low MPG figures being from a
crappy engine- but I think their false. Case in point, the Mini One D
doesn't get great econ either for being a 1.4L diesel.

I can beat that! Unfortunately.....
I got 12MPG on my last tank... 152 miles, 12.63gallon refill.
Have an appointment in 2 days to take it in to the dealer.
Also lost my power! Can only get to 35MPH in fisrt gear and 50MPH by third.
The check engine light is not on ....
Previous four tanks only gave me 15mpg.
It's a 2003 MCS w/1300 miles only!
(yes, I'm using 91octane, city driving only, w/AC)

I have gotten crap mileage forever (sub 20 mpg), both with the MCS and the MC. It's not the car's fault, though. I drive about 10 miles a day (on an average workday), and that 10 miles is made up entirely of driving straight across downtown...twice. Also, I tend to gun it about 50% of the time (at least). When I've gotten it out on the highway, my MCS tends to get about 30 mpg, though...and that's at 80 mph.
My mileage is small too - I admit it. Usually around 20 mpg. It seems the first question many people ask is "how great is the mileage"?. I usually just tell them I've never really paid attention ... which is mostly true. The reason I don'y pay attention is because I know it's not good.
That said, who really cares? If I wanted good mileage I wouldn't be having any fun. I didn't void my warranty in most areas for nothing.

I get probably low 20's in the city - like 22 or 23mpg. I probably get low-mid 30's on the highway and about 25 or so mpg overall (mostly suburban driving). I have intake and pulley. We'll see what an exhaust does in a few weeks...
Nobull,
I've been checking my mileage post pulley install. I drive 50% city stop and go, and 50% city/rural highways. I'm currently averaging 25.5 mpg for the last 2,000 miles (8 tankfuls) since resetting my OBC (avg. speed had been 30.3 mph). I use 91 octane or higher. Highway only MPG is about 30, while city stop and go is closer to 21 - 22. I think that the mileage I'm experiencing is about normal for the way and style that I drive.

City - avg. 20mpg
Highway between 23-30mpg - depending on distance & level of agression
Broke it in a little differently than what was specified, and now drive it like I stole it. ...Still seem to have "decent" milage compared to some here.
Have the pulley, ECU, intake, cat-back and Denso IK20's.
It sure ain't no honda for milage... but then I got rid of my honda because this was so much more fun. No looking back!

When I first got my MCS I had good, albeit disappointing, mileage. Which is to say I was doing mixed driving, quite conservatively (i.e. running around 3k rpm), and pulling in a whopping 24-26mpg. However, I noticed after one tank of particularly "agressive" driving (for me, anyway, which means shifting around 4k rpm and running around a steady 3200-3500 rpm) that my fuel economy improved greatly. So, I keep it around 3500 and I'm now getting about 30mpg mixed and 32-34mpg highway. That's calculated by hand, which is generally consistant with OBC readings.
