Drivetrain RMW cam confusion. Jan? (CLOSED WHY?)
How about we put this whole thing into perspective. A year ago this cam at £210.00 would have cost $411.60 at the exchange rate for 12 Feb 08. Today because the exchange rate is favoring the US dollar it costs $299. We all know that this can and will change on a daily basis. I understand that everyone is looking for a bargain, myself included, but it is very impractical to expect retailers to adjust their prices everytime the exchange rate flucuates.
Yeah, that too, but hey now that Jan has brought it here, tested it, promoted it, and shown that it is one of the best cams for the MINI, I guess Newman doesn't really need him to sell them for him anymore in the USA.
For every 1 person that wants to save a few bucks and order from the UK I'm sure Jan has 5 others that prefer to give him the business. I bet it's a non-issue for Jan.. Just annoying I'm sure...
Well, following this has certainly been interesting, I'm seriously considering cancelling my Cable TV, this is more entertaining and a heckuva lot cheaper to boot.
I've seen Jan in action (I have an RMW tune, and it was well worth it, although it did cause me a high speed spin as I went through an area of Road America where pre-tune I could go full throttle, not so post tune, as I learned to my chagrin....), and his whole program is top notch. In retrospect, it would perhaps been better to just say this is the cam we use, not take credit for it as custom (although it does appear custom cams are on the way), and not disclose where it was coming from. But that too would have opened up a can of worms--everyone would have been trying to figure where the damned thing came from, so they could try and find it cheaper, or bash it, or copy it, or whatever. That leaves Jan with a bunch of R and D work, and nothing to show for it. We've seen it time and time again; Jan will come out with something that's dyno proven, and people will demand the exact spec's. Why do you think that is? All that really matters is the stuff works....
It's a tough spot. Yes, I think it would have been better to not advertise it as a custom cam, and withhold the source (I think that is entirely fair given the work that went into putting together a cam/head/header combo that works and plays well together), but I could be wrong...Some of this stuff is like the colonel's secret recipe, and I have no problem not knowing every last detail of it's specs, as long as it works, and Jan stands behind it.
So I'm mildly disappointed in how the cam was presented, but I understand the conundrum. On the other hand, if I had my way, I'd sell my loaded 2006 JCW MCS, get a GP, and load it up with Jan's Cam/Head/Header/Exhaust combo, throw some coilovers on there, upgrade the brakes and never look back...

well you could say if newman didn't agree to jan being the sole distributer in u.s. they and jan must have known what they were doing. so sooner or later the cat would be out of the bag . so spilled milk and all that . next time agreement up front no?
