Drivetrain what is the 1/4 mile on the minicooper s?
Regarding 1/4 mile times...
In EVO (#47, Sept '02) they quote the British MCS as 0-60mph (7.7sec), and 1/4 mile (89mph/16.0sec).
The 0-60 time may have been hurt by a poorly timed shift; because 0-50 the times for the MCS and Honda Civic Type-R (197HP!) were: 5.7sec & 5.2 sec (MINI, 0.5 sec slower).
At 0-60, the numbers were: 7.7sec & 6.8 sec (MINI, 0.9 sec slower). So, I imagine the 8000rpm Honda just kept winding, and the MINI had to shift... real word performance probably wouldn't be as noticeable (although, around 80 or 90, the power of the Honda starts to pull away; 197hp @ 7400rpm vs 161hp @ 6000rpm (MINI); ultimately, horsepower wins).
That was the only data I could find in the magazines at hand.

>>It's not terribly important but 0-60 times are one of the most basic ways to calculate a car's performance. True, the MINI is more of an autocross-bred machine but 0-60 times are just as important. I want a car with a decent 0-60 time because that will dictate whether I can be able to accelerate in traffic to pass up a slow-moving car, pull out into traffic with relative ease, or make it to that merge if I'm stuck next to a bus. There's a lot of real-world situations a 0-60 time can apply to.

For most of the above, 0-60mph doesn't matter too much. It's passing acceleration and while the MCS isn't very good off the line, it has outstanding passing speed IMO.

For those interested in DATA; the article I mentioned (above; EVO 9/02) ALSO had passing performance of the same three cars: Civic Type-R, MCS, Leon Cupra R. They tabulate the TIMES from 20-40mph, 30-50, 40-60... up to 80-100mph; for each 20mph "pass", they quote the times if you accelerated in 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th gear. With one exception, the MINI S was consistently slowest. (remember: the other two cars had 197 & 210HP, respectively)
Reminds me of a quote attributed to a racer (Hans Stuck?) in the late '70's, who was driving a Group 5 Porsche Turbo: "...if you start (ie, the Porsche) with a street car, it will ALWAYS handle like a PIG! ...However, with enough horsepower, you can make a VERY fast Pig!"

I have clocked my Cooper S at 0-60 in 6.3 secs. It seemed to do this consistently and from 0-100 in 16.0 secs. I have 8500 miles on it so it may seem a bit more broken in, but the hardest part in accelerating was getting traction off the line. I have also been street racing it (don't tell the cops) and found that i can beat an Audi TT roadster, Lexus LS430 (0-60 in 6.4) and also a '97 M3. I think the big advantage to the MCS is that it has a broad torque band and also the dual cone synchronizers allow for the fastest shifts that no other car can beat. None of the races were even close in fact, if the races would have been longer I might have beat them by 4 or more car lengths.
It's funny.. my MCS isn't broken in, so i can only speak for the lower power band, right right RIGHT off the line, it's slow, but the second it starts moving.. it's gone...
I totally dusted a guy with a late model trans am.. He was sitting at a green light, fiddling with something, just sitting there. So I honked my horn at him, and i must have offended his delicate sensabilities. He squeeled his wheels turning through the intersection, so i did too.. he spead off, so I did too... but the difference is, i flew past him...

LOL.. so I see tha the Qtr mile doesnt count... or is it the 0-60 doesnt count... no..no..the 0-100 doent count!! LOL
The guage of today IS the standing Qtr mile! 0-60 is cool, but the QTR tells the HP and MPH of the car!! Then everything else is just icing on the cake OR BS!! Cool??
I'm going to take mine to the track and run the numbers!! I'll be happy to let all ya'll know!! Oh and my shifting is unreal fast, Hooking in a front wheel drive is all in the launch.. So I'll have NO excuses.. Just killer ETs from a whinney 1.6 and a huffer!! Cool??
Just me...................

You got some NAWS in that ride of yours, dude?
Those cars you raced did not know they were racing or they are horribly inept drivers.
