Drivetrain 258 whp RMW street car
258 whp RMW street car
WARNING! - RMW content below.
This past Monday was the final step in the first chapter of modding my recently acquired '02 MCS. I met Jan at the dyno and my car was prepped and made ready for the dyno around 2pm in the warm afternoon. About 5 or 6 pulls later, my car made 258 whp, and 202 lb/ft torque. I'll let Jan post the dyno sheet as my computer skills aren't all that.
Now for a little bit of the story. I purchased the car from a co-worker and it had a blown head gasket. After talking to a number of MINI specialists, I ended up going to Minicorsa. Danny at Minicorsa did the R&R on the engine and trans, as well as a whole lot of other work, and was excellent to work with.
The engine went to Jan at Revolution Mini Works, where it got rebuilt with CP forged pistons (stock compression), RMW head, RMW cam, RMW street header, and lightweight flywheel. Once the engine got back to Minicorsa, a low mileage supercharger was installed with a 15% pulley. The car got treated to a new clutch, an OBX diff, and a few other goodies to keep it going straight down the road.
Before the dyno the 440cc injectors were installed, along with a new exhaust. Since the exhaust is a completely new combo from RMW (first one actually), I'll simply call it the RMW Street exhaust. Keep in mind that this is a very high quality, fully TIG (not MIG) welded exhaust. It's the same rear section as the RMW Race exhaust. The mid-section after the header is the big difference between the two. I drive this car every day, so droaning and overall volume inside and outside the car were big concerns of mine. In the end I have an exhaust that sounds great without any droaning, completely conducive to daily driving, and most of all it doesn't hinder power production! If I have an opportunity I'll try to get a video of the exhaust so everyone can hear it.
Big thanks go out to Danny at Minicorsa, Jan at RMW, and Mike (RMW exhaust fabricator). Thanks guys!

^^^ at least you're in the same country
my Mini's about 16 hours away by plane! the only way to get any RMW products is to have them expensively shipped here :(
great numbers! you must've gotten a sweet deal by getting all those RMW goodies all at once

Great results!!!
Is this the race exhaust system with a modified back section or is it the street header?
If it is the race system but with mods to make it quieter Jan will be getting an order

What intercooler are you running?

this our hushpower street version
Has 4 hushpower resonators and bolts up to the street headed
Sounds great too
Larry , wait til I send a pic of the GP as it now has the R56 JCW tips on it
Won't be home til Monday but I will take a few shots to show

I am constantly amazed at the larger part of the "Mini Community",who when asked If they know RMW....they have no clue.....spread the message one convert at a time!
similar to the combo I have but with all hushpower and short header?
Any sound clips?
This work out cheaper than the race system?
Thanks for the nice comments everyone! I'll try to answer a few questions here. The deal I got on the car was definitely smokin'
Because of the great deal, I was able to dump money into the engine and turn it into a reliable performer.
The exhaust has the RMW shorty / street header. From the header to the rear section of the exhaust is what's different and turned out to be an excellent plan on the part of Jan. Like was stated earlier, there are a total of four resonators in order to keep volume and resonance in check. The car will be going back to Mike on Monday so that he can make a jig of this exhaust system as I believe this will become the RMW street exhaust. I will try to get a video of the sound, however I have never used my video camera and have never downloaded a video online. So..., if there is someone local whose got a camera that wants to video it sooner than I probably will, you're welcome to come by and check it out.
I forgot to include that the intake is a JCW and the intercooler is the stock 142K + mile original unit. The clutch and flywheel are from RMW and I believe it's the Clutch Masters FX200 and the lightweight flywheel. The car was run on the dyno with 91 octane pump gas.
big howe - Once we got above 250, we were gunnin' for you.
Unfortunately we came up 0.6whp short. Maybe next time...
In the next chapter of this car I'll be concentrating on the suspension, including wheels and tires (at least for track use). For now the sleeper look is great. Beware of the stock MINI that appears to simply have an exhaust!

I think we should have a Danny caption competition;
" there was an engine in there a second ago, where did it go"
"what is crawling out of that heater pipe"
" I bet the mini blinks before I do"
"If I give it the evils for long enough it wont kick my *** around the SOW"

Since finishing the job he and Jan have been nothing but supportive.
Danny is the man when it comes to these MINIs. Your statement is highly accurate to the efficiency with which Danny works. I watched and timed him (he didn't know I was timing him by the way) as he removed the engine and trans from start to finish. It took him all of 50 (yes fifty, that's not a typo) minutes to do it.
