Cam/ Lifter major problem, yay!

Ok, so i was putting the afformentioned cam in the head, when i noticed a piece of orange plastic in the valve valley, so i pulled the rocker rail off again, and found two missing caps to the lifters. on went right back on, the other was broke. after inspection, there was a total of 3 cracked and loose lifter caps, all on the intake side. i looked at the exhaust side, and there was two that might or might not be, to fine to tell at this point.

anyone else ever have this problem (ive never of it, if so), what do you guys think?

Beecher/Kyriian

thanks alot

Show us some close up pics please Beecher.

If it was me I'd replace all the intake and exhaust rockers now and start fresh. Why take the chance.....

Below is a pic of my exhaust rocker assembly. The only wear was just some of the case hardening slightly scored on the valve stem contact pads(40,000+ miles).

ok, a good friend of our cam to the rescue and brought his complete spare head over to steal parts from.

generally speaking, everything in there was mint, except, in the bottom pic, those yellow hats, 3 ended up being cracked. it was a long day, but i just got it together now.

started at 9am, by 1130 i was putting the cam back in, and thats when i found out it needed to be clearence (the other post) i thought only the schrick needed that, and then after i clearanced them (which took a long time), i found the broken hats. Im just glad it fell off when it did, if it didnt, we never would have known.

oh, and just for good measure, two spark plug terminals also ripped off the plug wires. but they still worked afterwards, i just told him to put the stockers back on when he got home.

long story short, if you need to find out whats wrong with your car, give me a call, and ill work on it for a bit, ill find every PITA problem you got, hahahahah. It was almost like working on my hot rod.

thanks guys, and i guess you should check these things if you got your rockers off. cracks should be easy to see,

what should have caused this? I figure either valve float wreaking havoc, or maybe lifter pump up or something, or both, or just heat and age? you would think they would last more than 4 years.

Now im going to be paranoid about mine. oh good, someting else to add to the paranoia.

oh yeah, there was about a 5 hour brake in the middle, a straight cam swap should only take about 3 or maybe 4 hours, all going well. maybe an hour for clearancing, which should go quicker next time i hope.
