anyone know if something like this would work? it's for the R56, but it looks like it might fit. it may take some slight modification

it's even got those CF tips

Yes, it would work! The third chamber is a Helmholz resonator to get rid of the droning around 3k rpm (can be tuned for particular frequencies, but once set probably fixed.)
I think I saw this on the R56 forum--it's expensive...
btw, you can get those tips from a Chinese supplier in lots of 500 (!)

OK, the latest:

It's freakin' loud. Incredibly raw. I will have to work hard to keep the cabin level down to a scream, but it's light and totally unique. Even with 3 mufflers (custom 14" units) you can see right through the exhaust before install.
PM if you want more information on Sweet Thunder--I worked with them on this, sent drawings and measurements and the unit installed perfectly.

I will make some sound recordings this weekend and post.

Did Sweet Thunder assemble the mufflers for you? Did they weld together that Y pipe and hangars?

Yes, Bill at ST did it from my drawings. He chose the sizes of mufflers (centre 2.5" core, 2x 2" core units, all 14" long) and welded everything up. They sell those tips as Corvette C5 tips but I asked for them to be set in an oval design. All the angles worked perfectly. Just under $300.

No Myke, but I doubt there'd be any to report, based on my popo-dyno (of course most people report +20whp with the same instrument!) I was at about 205whp at my RMW tune, and although it sounds like I'm going faster...haha, I think that's all aural.
I will do some Dynolicious runs to see if anything changed.

The material may be slowing down the gas velocity because it probably is cooling the exhaust gases too fast! Try temperature probing the exhaust every 6 inches past the header and compare the exhaust temps... if you are rapidly having cooler exhaust as you go down your exhaust try using exhaust wrap to help keep the temps up... I bet you that you will see a decent gain if done right...

This might be possible. My CMC header is ceramic coated inside and out, so it's making the best of the gas heat, but after that I have a Flowmaster Hushpower resonator, then the big Sweet Thunder and then the 2 smaller mufflers.
I have an IR surface temperature gauge, would that do a reasonable job of telling me how the gas temperature is changing across the length of the system?

I believe so as you can see a gradual temp change in the pipe... try it out and report your findings!

I agree, I have been looking into doing the same with my skunk 2 exhaust... IMHO I dont see how a Y pipe would help gas velocity(as the air is re-directed and there is less temperature in both piping when the engine is running... and therefore not allowing full potential of the exhaust system... Also since the material is lighter it doesnt hold the heat in like stock systems and i feel properly wrapping my headers and exhaust will yield decent gains (expecting 7whp)

Man, Phil...this one looks louder than the first one!

How has it been after driving around with it? Is it good to go or strike 2?

It is a pretty sweet setup though!

It's really loud--and I removed the heat shield -- oddly I think the noise went down a little (just a little). I will have to put some serious sound deadening stuff inside the back of the car, but Ive been needing to do that anyway as I don't have any seats back there.

I have RMWs shorty header on my `03. I deleted the battery box, moved the battery. Ran 2.5" exhaust with 2 of RMW's resonators inline and the stock muffler off an `07 Cooper straight out the back. It is slightly more quiet than another local `03 with the same header and an Alta 2.5" cat back. I'll see if I can find a pic somewhere....

DrPhilGandini, thanks for jumping out there on this mod & doing a great job with the write-up & pictures. It's *extremely* helpful to see how people are approaching this install.

Not yet--had a busy weekend with family things. The car always comes second (that's just not right...)
