K&N Apollo 57A-6037 Air Intake for R56 S

Hey,
I got an email from K&N the other day about a new Intake for the R56 Cooper S.

Details are as follows:

K&N Apollo Cold Air Induction Systems incorporate a washable/reusable K&N High-Flow Air Filter within a protective shell. They come with custom mounting hardware to fit specific vehicle applications. The Apollo's shell reduces heat build-up and feeds cool air into your engine, resulting in improved volumetric efficiency and increased power gains. Apollo Cold Air Induction Systems allow for updating your vehicle's intake system while retaining a closed environment.

I would like to see a picture of it installed and hear how it sounds.

The cost is $239 and change.

Fig #22 on their instruction sheet PDF on that page makes it look like air would get constricted in that tube the way it kinks doing a U-turn just before the filter. The pictures make it hard to tell how harsh that bend is.

One distinct difference with this design is that it is utilizing only the factory air tube to take air in from just behind the grill and not any hot air in the engine bay itself. I can't see it being as loud as the intakes that are more like the DDM Street or Alta. That's a lot of twisting tubes for air to flow through.

I see what you mean. Not looking efficient for smooth air flow. For the price I think the Alta is a cleaner system, but I am not sure it's the way to go. Listened to a sound bit of Alta and was not impressed.
Going to re-listen to see if the setup might have been the cause of it sounding whinny.

Just a general question related to K&N replacement air filter:
Anyone out there having problem of engine running too lean with a replacement K&N air filter? I have a replacement filter (K&N #33-2936) in my 2008 Cooper S (manual trans); the engine check light comes on every several thousands of miles. The dealer would clear all the faults in the ECU under the warranty (of course they did not know of the K&N filter in the Cooper!). My guess of the engine running lean was based on my experience on other vehicles such as Ford and Toyota. If indeed a problem, anyone know of a work around solution, eg. a device that allows me to clear the engine faults myself?

Thanks,

Hi th3118:

Could you give me some info./tips on the ECU whereabout on the car? By the way, the ScanGauge II sounded as if it would be a fantastic tool; I already placed an order for one.

Thanks so much.
