Belt Squeaking badly...

Hello everyone,

I just installed a 17% pulley (ALTA v2) and I also purchased a new JCW belt to make sure theres no slippage.. but after install when my cars cold it squeaks like CRAZY LOUD... from dead cold over night it will squeak for about 10 minutes of driving and like I said its very loud... can anyone tell me how to fix this?? Thanks ahead of time!

The JCW belt is made for the 14.?% pulley. You might need a smaller belt. It's possible that your tensioner isn't working well, which would mean that the belt isn't tight enough and squeals for that reason.

I've heard good things about the Gatorback, but I'm running one from Gates on my 16% M7 that is working like a champ. I'm sure that the part numbers for both of these are posted all over NAM. I carry a spare in the boot, just in case. It's cheap insurance. With a belt squeeling and a fairly agressive pulley, you might want to do the same.

Hello!
Check the tensioner tab. How many holes do you see? Also I'm running 17% V2 with the Gates 0035 and I got a 0032 for spare. Henry

wrong bet for the 17%. Try the 035. If it still squeals you might have a tensioner issue. How old is your car? We are assuming that you didn't have a squeal before, right?

As others have said the JCW Belt is for the JCW Pulley. Putting a JCW Belt on a pulley that's another 5-6% smaller than OEM (Above the ~11% of JCW) is obviously going to change the belt tension quite a bit. Take a look at your tensioner. If you can't see the holes in the side near the spring the belt is too loose.

Well this is the weird thing... I originally had a 15/2 setup and then my tensioner went (for the SECOND time) and I decided it was because of the crank pulley (before i put the crank pulley on I didnt have issues at all) so I purchased a 17% v2, a 05 crank pulley, a new tensioner, and a new JCW belt for good measure... when my mechanic installed everything he actually mentioned how tight the belt was, he said it was really tight.. so I dont know what to think? I dont know if my belts slipping or maybe my supercharger itself is squealing? I dont know, any suggestions would be very appreciative.. I asked my mechanic and he says the charger might be going.. but i find that hard to believe.. Thanks!

If the supercharger is starting to freeze up, it could be fighting the belt and causing it to slip until the charger warms up and frees up or until the belt gets so hot that it has enough traction to power thrugh the sticky charger.

Normally, I think, our superchargers go the other direction... that the internal gears gnash away and it spins too easily without giving power to turn the blower.

There's also the possibility (as reported by Motogeno on another thread regarding belt squeak) that the supercharger shaft itself may be too long (out of tolerances), making the assembly out of alignment. He/we had gone through several belts, different pulleys, re-installs, etc.

He ended up having the shop take down a couple of mm, if I remember correctly.

Fixed the squeak right up.
