Quaife Getrag 6 speed dog engagement

Has anyone tried this out, or even heard of it before?

http://www.quaife.co.uk/Mini-Cooper-...gement-gearkit

I've heard some people wanted a dog engagement for the Getrag. It is a bit pricey at £2,450.00 or about $4826.50

I posted this in the paddle shift thread a few days ago...I hope to buy it as my last component whenever the money comes in...

I wish someone who has it could chime in, but I bet there is not many with it unless they are in Europe...

You dont need to live in Europe to have close cut gears... . Its not something for the street...but I will have them someday since I am an obnoxious beotch and Im almost deaf from running an open header anyways...

Dog Tooth gears are just gears that are straight cut, rather than interfacing at a slant (Helical). They're VERY noisy, but can take loads more power, and a LOT more abuse.

Here's a good example of why NOT to run dog tooth gears on the street . That ear piercing whine you hear is from the gearbox...

I don't know of anyone that has done the Getrag dog- seems expensive compared to-

http://helix13.com/mini/products/suspension-chasis
HMS 7010 Lowered Final Drive Gears $1699.00 Quantity Imported from MINI Sport in England, one of the leading racing preparation shops, this king gear and pair of pinions loweres the final drive ratio of the Getrag 6 speed gearbox. It uses straight cut gears so the car is a little louder with that race-car whine. The result is very impressive on pre 2005 cars: the acceleration is ferocious, especially in the lowered gear. We installed this kit in a well-modified 2003 and the car is without a doubt the quickest non turbo car we have driven. The limiting factor is traction, not power. For more details on installation, and gear ratios, please call the shop.

and Optional Quaife
HMS 7001 Quaife MINI Cooper S R53 2002-2006 $1195.00 Please call to order HMS 7002 Quaife MINI Cooper $1170.00 Please call to order This A.T.B. differential enables your MINI to put the power to the ground in nearly all conditions. The Quaife unique design offers maximum traction, improves handling and steering, and puts the power where it is needed most. A definite advantage whether on the track or on the street. All Quaife A.T.B. differentials have a lifetime warranty.

The Lowered gearing 6 speed is like the 2005 version of MCS manual transmission well suited as an addition for 2002-2004 MCS that had a taller gearing version of Getrag 6 speed.

A recent post by Way of Way Motors formerly in Ohio mentioned he's installed about 5 of these with good results and I think Steve's auto in southern CA has also done this upgrade.

I ran a dogbox on one of my STI's, virtually indestructable but forget about using it on the street.

Dog engagement is different than straight cut gears. You can have dog engagement with helical gears, synchro engagement with straight gears, or any other combo.

The Helix offering is just a straight cut final drive; no change to the engagement mechanism.

Dog engagement allows for true clutchless shifts.

When my synchros go, I am doing this hands down. About the same cost as buying a new transmission anyways, considering ours can't be rebuilt.

That is nice to know, I will have to give Helix and Way a call about that

Yes. Straight cut gears make the noise, not the engagement method. Dog engagement, unlike synchros, essentially uses a solid collect to immediately engage a gear. Synchros are somewhat tapered, providing for a slower, but less harsh and easier, engagement. A dogbox requires very direct, precise, powerful shifts...you need to know what you are doing.

The advantage of straight cut gears is primarily one of strength; since the whole face engages at once, much more force can be applied in a given moment. Helical gears are more prone to shearing off under high, immediate torque loads.

Should clear some things up.

Adding Quaife by itself causes no noise change in transmission.

That racer needs a very loud stereo or a very good set of ear plugs.

I hurt my ears in less than a minute of viewing the video.
You'd probably be hurting the ears of all the other drivers around you.

Come to think of it did you notice you don't really "hear much" from all the other cars, it's all drowned out by the high pitched gear noises! I do hear the MINI engine in the back ground just a little.

Were you addressing the gears or the LSD? I know the LSD is not going to change much noise, but what about quaife's gears?

Ok, so I just finished the video...All I can say is how do I get mine...

I am going to email them to find out if they will make a Helical Dog engagement box for the Mini...

This would be perfect...especailly if the Quaife is a straight cut...just too much noise...

I don't think that was a MINI

All this youtube has done what it normally does to me (One leads to another leads to another and 30 minutes later I'm still watching random videos). Anyway, this one is a classic (Were the 80's really this awesome? .

Another great video: The foot shots give you a great idea of just how insane rally driving really is. Anyone else want to argue that Nascar takes more skill? .

Audi S1 Quattro:

Funny Nascar Vid:

Couldn't find any videos of Nascar actually racing, they're all crash videos... haha

This video is for sure a keeper though! The fact that the guy drives a Mini is even better! . Kinda how your car drive's eh Tuls? Being undrivable and all .

Rumor has it there might be one of these floating around Van Nuys

Vividracing has a set. It's not under the MINI search, it's just under gearsets. I don't know why the search for the mini doesn't work. They're called "semihelical" as far as the type of gears goes.
