Nah, I was just going for the extreme .

It's noticeably louder, but not anywhere close to that video of the BMW (That's actually mostly poor audio quality). Some cars have straight cut gears for reverse, that's why they're somewhat noisy when backing up.

I'd probably go to a dog engagement with straight cut gears if my transmission ever failed .

If the cost of putting in dog engagement to our transmissions is the same or less than a new transmission, I'll get it when my synchros fail.

Well the parts cost is similar. If I recall, a new transmission for ours runs ~4k or more, parts only...and they cannot be rebuilt (parts lock). I'll pay the difference for a hardcore box. I love performance drivetrains. Sequential dogbox would have made my day.

I talked to PPG...they are in Australia and could be interested if there were enough of us to bring costs down...it would be ~$10,000 Australian for a '1' off...they will do it if you want to pay the money...

PPG will do any combination of gears/engagements/etc... They are a pretty sick company

That is actually quite inexpensive for a one off. The quaiffe set is semi-helical cut and costs about 7,000 USD.

I would think the trans should be able to be disassembled. I would think it's like most any other manual trans where everything is pressed onto a sliding shaft. Anyone been inside a R53 Getrag?

ahhh 80's groupe b rally racing... when the men were men and the world champion was a woman :P

No but seriously.... that's pretty cool that ppg is offering that. I'm not sure that there are enough people putting down the kind of power that would need such a thing. Basically if jan is still using stock getrags... i mean... who's gonna need them?

To rebuild a box all we'll need are the various bearings, synchros(and slider hubs), and gears(laygear too) that have been abused(worn gear teeth/chipped or broken off dog teeth). Hopefully our bearings, mainshafts and layshaft are good at handling our lifetime trans fluid. The shift forks may need replacing too if they're bent/misaligned due power shifting. Perhaps Quaife or another drivetrain company will make replacements or offer a full rebuild kit for us in the future.

Yeah, that is Australian...I don't know what it is for USD, but not bad... The Quaife can be had for ~$4600USD from quaife and for $5600USD here: http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/q...d-p-34963.html

It's the tooling for a rebuild kit that a manufacturer has yet undertake and capitalize on. To my knowledge, the only way to get new synchro's/gears is with a new transmission itself.

Short of the Quaife dog-engagement wonder here that is.
