DIY - Port & Polish TB

Well here it is.....

DISCLAIMER: I do not take any responsibility if YOU mess your TB up.

Time: 2.5 hours

Tools:
Straight head screwdriver
pliers
torx bit (small one to remove the blade)
dremel tool
grindng stones for dremel (I used the angle one)
sandpaper (120, 220, 400, 1000)
10mm socket with rachet
Sharpie Marker

1. Remove the upper and lower intake hoses. The lower hose is the hose that runs from the front by the radiator to the lower part of the intake box. The upper one goes from the TB to the top part of the intake box.

2. Once hoses are removed, you can see the TB. There are 4 10mm bolts to remove and also the vaccum line (gold L out of TB). Once removed, take the TB off the supercharger intake tube. Becareful as there is a gasket o-ring on the back of it. You do not want to lose that.

3. This is a good time to clean it out, as it is probably black on the back side and around the blade. After cleaning let dry.

4. Take the sharpie marker, perferably one with a tip, and run it around the edge of the blade and the TB wall on the front side of the TB. This is marking it so you know where NOT to grind. Also mark the blade so you know which side is the front.

5. Remove the blade with the torx bit. Only 2 screws in the middle of the blade. Once removed just turn the blade all the way open and slide it out. There are 2 tabs on the back of the blade. These tabs allow the blade to only be inserted one way.

6. This is where I knife edged my blade. You do not have to do this. But if you do, be VERY CAREFUL to not mess up the edge of the blade. I used the dremel and the grinding stone, then switched to the sandpaper to smooth it out.
BEFORE

AFTER

7. Now you should have something like this...

Time to break out the dremel somemore. You see that lip inside the TB? You need to grind that out to where it is smooth.

8. Once done it should look like this...

9. Now the sanding starts. Start with the 120 grit and just start smoothing it out a little. work your way up to 1000 grit and it is smooth. You will be able to tell.

Here is another shot after 400.

10. Once you hit the 1000 grit and fell it is pretty smooth, break out the dremel again and put a buffing wheel on it. Use some compound and start buffing it. like waxing a car. Take your time. Put it on, then wipe it off. Once you are satisfied with the polishing look your done.

11. Clean TB good, to make sure all metal flakes are removed.

12. Put Everything back together and torque the 4 10mm bolts for the TB to 7ftlbs.

I hope this helps everyone and if you have any questions, feel free to ask or PM me.

That's easier than I thought it would be. The picture that you drew really helps explain it well. 2 thumbs up, this definitely goes on my list of things to do.

Important step that might be worth mentioning is to make sure there arent any metal files or the like left in the TB before you put it back in.

I have seen a few of these DIY write ups lately. Someone should add them to the How-To section.

Ok, so I'll be the first...

Notice any difference when driving? Smoother throttle response? More power? Is this the first step in more work, or just trying it out?

Nice work btw, looks like you took your time and didn't hack it up.

smoother throttle for me. Mine orginally seemed to stumble every now and then. It has not done this since I did this mod.

It does seem to want to get up and go a little more. But that is by the butt dyno. It also revs a little fast, more responsive.

This would be the first step in more work, I noticed the supercharger intake tube has alot to be desired as far as smoothing the air flow there. But after looking at the tube, it seems that there are a couple of things I might try, but that will be in another post at a later time.

I will be doing some data logging next week to see if things are working better.
