Drivetrain When do you clean your air intake filter?
I’ve had my Madness air intake for some months now. I realize that if it’s clean, air flows easer, but it’s not practical to clean it every 300 miles.
I know it has lots to do with how you drive, where you drive and the conditions you drive in, but let’s get down to an average type answer.
How often do you clean your air intake filter – that is, approximately after how many miles?

That's a very good question. I just got my Green Twister Itake yesterday but have not installed it yet, but I would be very interested to know from people with aftermarket intake experience give us some idea of how often or after how many miles they recomend a filter cleaning.
Thanks for all the help you guys can provide...

I'm assuming the Madness intake filter is similar to a K&N? The interesting thing to keep in mind with these is that the "dirtier" they get, the better they work - from a filtering perspective. A nice clean filter flows better, but theoretically allows more fine grit to pass by too. I used to have a link to a good report about this from a testing facitly, but have long since lost it.
I haven't replaced my stock intake on the MCS (yet), but on my motorcycles, I clean my K&Ns when they stop looking red, and start looking black!
Oh, and if you filter requires oil, be sure to use it after you clean, or you'll be passing alot of grit!

Yes, Jason the K&H is the same basic filter as the Madness as I understand.
And I have read the test papers and reports that state exactly what you say, but there must be a fine line between optimal and minimal.
So my question still stands – when should I clean my air intake filter.
Thanks for putting together the GREATEST MINI RALLY to this date.

No problem... I have a hunch that the rally next year is going to be amazing!
As for the filter, unless you can see a buildup of dirt on it, then I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think you can put a generic milage recommendation on it, because folks that live in dusty areas are probably going to have to clean them more frequently than others.
One of my bikes has a K&N panel filter in an open airbox. This is a somewhat protected location, but it does get wet. As a result, I've never really had to clean it, but I have re-oiled it a couple times. My other bike has pod filters that are totally exposed to the elements, and they get dirty. Those probably get cleaned about 3 times a year.
So, as long as it's properly oiled, and not completely black, it should be fine.
I'll have to get that K&N Typhoon put on pretty soon so I can get some first-hand mini filter experience!

I'm installing a BMP intake this weekend, which I got from ebay. So...no instructions or manual or anything. I got the install instructions already (looks pretty straightforward) but I have no idea about cleaning or oiling. Does the BMP require oiling? How do I clean it? Just remove it and hose it down? :???:

There are spray cleaners out the. Stop by you local HI-Performance shop, Pep Boys or whatever. I’m sure they will point you to the right aisle. The same with the spray filter oil.
If the filter is a bright pink type colour, then it needs to be oiled and most if not all these days are shipped that way, DRY.
As far as if the BMP needs oiling – I don’t know, but when you get it you should be able to tell by the look of it as I mentioned above.
You'll love the sound and feel when you get it in - I'm betting on it.

I have about 24,000 miles on my MINI Madness/Rogue intake. I'm cleaning/re-oiling it about every 7,000 miles and that seems to be working out nicely.
If you were driving on dirt roads a lot, I'd clean it more often.

For the people with Pilo Racing Intakes (Twister for the Cooper, or Pilo Racing Cold Air intake for the MCS), Green Filter Recomends cleaning every 10K miles. The CLeaning kits are available from my sit on my sig below. I ould guess the maddness intake is very similar to this.
Thanks

Just a note: The stock air filter looked hideous at around 5000 when I removed it to put the pilo intake. Not sure why it had so much debris at barely 5k miles! The green filter with the pilo looks very clean after 2500 miles in comparison.

>>The Rogue Engineering CAF kit (same as the MM) I installed had a S&B filter which included the air filter cleaner and oil. I was told by RE that 10k miles is the bogie for cleaning.

The directions were simple enough as I just did it:
- Knock off loose dirt from the filter
- Rinse with low pressure water from the inside (clean) to the outside (dirty)
- Spray the cleaner (appears to be water-based) from the outside over a pan hitting every pleat.
- Rinse with low pressure water again from the inside. The "pinkese oil" washed off.
- Shake off the loose water
- Set aside to dry (doing it right now overnight)
- Spray with the oil in the morning after the paper element is dry.
- Re-assemble with hose clamp
- Done
Note: When I removed the filter, the hose clamp had lost some of its clamping load. Will need to check every so often going forward.

SMKKVK has it right for cleaning. I also have the Madness/Rogue unit. At the NorCal pulley party this week, Randy mentioned that you could tell that the filter was dirty when it turns a greyish color. When you clean it, it will turn white. When you re-oil it, it will turn pink again. I hope this helps!
Cheers!
Cheers!
I noticed a slight gray color on the filter prior to cleaning, mileage 8056. Still a good idea to clean it as the MCS will need to suck all the air in it can as I get the NRP exhaust installed tomorrow. Not to change the thread topic, but after hearing a friends NRP on his MCS - it's the one.

Been out of town for a bit so I had to look for this thread.
Thanks for all the information about the cleaning. Mine is looking as though it may be coming close to the cleaning point. Knowing everyone drives in different conditions, colour and sight checks are probably the best way to go. Thanks again for everyones input.
