A lot of people love their Alta. I had one and just didn't like the noise level when driving with others in the car. Got the Dinan and love it. It is mated to the Alta silicone inlet hose... Provides excellent performance and heat shielding, along with great SC whine without being too loud.

You can also modify the stock air box to accept the aftermarket JCW fitting filter. Just takes some time and creativity.

Here's a link to the product review area, although the K&N is not covered.

Any gains in power or sound in doing this?

Intakes don't offer a significant performance increase, but they are great for enhancing the driving experience. I have the Alta w/ the tube, and love it! Of all the intakes, I'd say Alta is definitely the loudest, only to be surpassed by the AGS. I personally don't think the Alta is loud at all, but...I love loud, the louder the better, so that could be why.

just my 2 cents but look into getting one of these intakes from VP and lose the worries about it being to lound or not being able to run a strut bar.it fit within oem specs and completly blocks the hot engine bay air frome the intake charge.sounds nice to.

Yes and Yes.
Should gain as much power and make as much noise. You also have to make the hole on the rear of the bottom of the air box larger.

If your a fan of intake noise the Alta is the way to go. Only intake that was louder that i've heard was the M7 AGS system but thats no longer made. The DDm and Alta are great and around the same style system. The K&N and the ABD(autobahndesigns) monster are 2 hot air intakes that are about the same. Just to open up a couple more possibilities for you

Edit* And all the intakes listed above will work with most strut bars *

That's friggin funny!

reccomend an intake from a random guy that no one knows how to get hold of!

Anyway, there are tons of choices. The K&N has some downside, but also is the only one with a CARB exemption sticker! All the rest don't. The JCW is good that way too, but really is a factory option, not aftermarket.

There's a lot that goes into the mix, and it appears that the sound is directly proportional to how much of the rear baffle you remove.

Matt

I did some testing...

and the traditional HAI is just the same power as stock, a bit better sound, and better throttle response. I never did a test of the HAI with the baffles I've made since that keep the air that's gone through the radiator out. For pretty much all of the intakes, you're talking a few HP, maybe a couple more.

The basic idea is that colder air is denser (true) and that better flow will increase the air density pre SC, so that you get more air charge into the combustion chambers.

For what it's worth, I don't know that it's worth all the time and effort that many have put into the choice of intake, but to each thier own. If one really wants a good deal on an intake, you can make your own, or buy from the marketplace at an extreme discount. But like I mentioned before, it's whatever your own priorities are that dictate which way to go.

Matt

I agree with Matt. Just remember, it all comes down to doing what you can afford to do and what makes you happy. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Some intakes are sleathy (Dinan, JCW) while some intakes look and sound more aggressive. If you have the time and funds, it's fun to experiment. Plus, you can always sell yours on NAM and try something else. At one point, just for kicks, I simply removed the airbox lid and clamped on a large cylindrical air filter... Cost me about $25 and ten minutes, and their was quite an initial performance gain (which quickly went away in stop-n-go city traffic due to heat build up). So you can spend $20 and be happy or $320 and be happy. All the intakes mentioned so far are very equal in build quality and performance, so in the end it may simply come down to which intake brings out the biggest smile.

Cheers!

Hey folks,

Just a couple points that we may have already covered above but if not, no big deal.

In terms of noise, If you are looking for the most HP and the least noise, the JCW air-box with ALTA inlet tube is the best.

If you are ok with what many believe to be the pleasant sounds coming from the S/C once you uncork them through the intake is the ALTA Intake with Inlet tube. Consistently makes dramatic and repeatable gains, with no other downside. Out of the hundreds we sell each year only a handful of clients are upset with the sound levels. The overwhelming majority love the sound and performance.

Don't forget that milage is improved as well! (But you have to keep your foot out of it ;-)

Anyway, If I can answer any other questions or concerns, PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me directly!

Thanks again for considering ALTA!

dyno plots on the intake tube please? (second request) seems more a bling mod than a performance one, but I'd like to be shown the data
