Drivetrain Removing SC pulley without a puller
Removing SC pulley without a puller
I searched but I didn't find much. I am installing a M7 pulley in 2 weeks. I don't have a purpose built pulley puller. Will this be an issue? I have access to a full pulley removal set that you see at a auto shops.
Thanks,

I have done it with a standard puller (because somebody else started it against my advice) and it was a nightmare, but eventually got done and completely destroyed the pulley in the process. I HIGHLY recommend you get a purpose-built puller before doing this. They don't cost that much. In most areas, you can find a club member who has one.
Holy old thread... I would recommend getting a purpose built puller. I ended up buying an Alta puller and reselling it here after i used it. It cost me about $10 in all. It was very easy with the alta tool i tried with a standard puller first but space is very limited.
My brother and I ground mine off VERY carefully and separated the pulley enough to pull it off.

WOW.....most places that sell pulleys will rent you a puller for a couple bucks!! You probably spent more money and time on grinding wheels than you saved on the 10 puller rental....but if it worked who cares!! Good story to tell!!
Where do you live?
I'd start with local clubs if there are any in your area? And there are lots that make pulley tools for the car. Check with the vendors listed in the vendor site. Also check the Marketplace. Lots of pulley tools get resold there.
Good luck!

Pullers can be used hundreds of times......New they are $60 ish, but for the cost of $10 or so you can rent one, or sometimes get a free loaner when you buy your pulley.
Installing a pulley is not super hard, but it is well worth the $$ to have it installed by someone who has prior experience, (that's why pulley parties are a popular club event!!) because if the install goes bad, you car maybe stuck, or very screwed up. Sometimes if you have a misaligned pulley, it will not even be apparent till you drive a few hundred miles, throw a belt, and need to replace a tensioner.
For another $25 or so I strongly recommend adding a Detroit Tuned Tensioner Stop to prevent damage if the belt is thrown or breaks.
There a many people who have been down that dark and $$$ road. Many more of course who have had no problems. Some very good installers (mine for one

),
will sometimes sell 15% for $200 installed (even seen $175.00), and then charge you only $25 or so for a new belt if you need one...for a total of about what the dealer will charge ya for a belt change!!

Well I had a 3 jaw puller and it worked great. Very easy to pull off. The only thing the OEM pulley had 3 bite marks on it so that means it can never be used again. I don't think OEM pulley can be re installed because of being pressed on.
