Yes.

Off throddle (primarily when shifting at higher RPM's) there is a noticable hissing sound of the pressurized exhaust gasses venting from the turbo. You can hear it here:

...and here:

Not everyones cup of tea. Unfortunately there are only a few things you can do to the turbo car to get more auditory feedback (open intake, louder exhaust and get some type of BOV). Everyone's got their opinion as to what sounds their car should make. Heck, I've heard some (non-MINI owners) complain about the supercharger's whine. To each his own.

As to design, the Forge setup is beautiful in it's simplicity. Machining and workmanship is top notch. Basiclly just uses the existing solonoid to open and close the wastegate that's allready there. Rather than recirculating those hot pressurized gasses back into the intake track it blows them out the spacer's holes and makes a little noise.

Perfomance gains... probably neglidgible.

Charcter gains... again, a matter of taste. It just depends on what you're used to hearing from a turbo. I've got one. Haven't decided if it's going to stay or not. We'll see.

No this will not cause harm to your vehicle. It's solely a noisemaker

Wasn't there a thing about the ECU expecting that recirculated air to be present back in the intake for the MAF reading?

Yes, that was a point of speculation when the product was first being developed.

Since it's gone out to customers I haven't heard of anyone actually having any "real-world" issues. I haven't had any problems with mine. So I would say it's not a problem after all.
