Solid Motor Mounts

Has anyone seen anything besides the Polyurethane mounts on the market?

I made a set of solid brass mounts a while back, but the abuse has gotten to them.

Brass is way too soft. Aluminum is better and Delrin might be best.
Hopefully you did all three motor/tranny mounts? Right, left and bottom. ?

Yeah, they are all brass.

I just cut out the rubber parts and pressed in brass inserts, then drilled out the center hole.

Theres just slight play in them now, just starting to become noticable right off the line.

Can you get Delrin in a block? The only time i've ever worked with Delrin was with RC cars.

onlinemetals.com is also a good place for material. I've gotten some AL from them before in various forms. They also have plastics I believe. How rough is it having solid mounts?

Not too bad at all, makes shifts feel so much firmer because the motor cant rock backward when you let off the gas.

At an idle is the only bad part, you have some vibration there, just enough to vibrate the rearview.

i had an aluminum one made for the bottom. I have desigend an upper, but never got around to making it. It was solid at first, at it was rediculous! I didnt mind the vibration, but couldnt stand the noise. What i ended up doing was cutting some rubber washers out of some 1/4 inch rubber sheet i had, and put them between the oil pan bracket and the bracket and the bolt heads. Most ofhte vibration went away, and only about 3000RPM do you really notice it. While shifting it is fine up there, but driving on the highway with your windows up above 3k is tiresome from the noise. I love it, even a friend, who didnt know i put it in, asked why my shifting sudenly got so much better (and it wasnt bad before). My supper is done right now, but i will try to put a pic of the mount next to the stock one in my gallery in the next hour. I dont think i would want a sold delrin mount down there, delrin insterts sure, on one end if using stock bracket as a starting place, and use a poly on the small end. Do the same for the upper if you can (later cars use a different upper mount). I will also say that mine is alot bigger than it needs to be, and barely fits into bracket (because its on an angle, its a good thing i milled the corners off so long as it was in the mill, other wise it would have been back to the mill).

Beecher, not sure if in fact you are only using a solid lower motor mount with the rest stock, but it sounds like that. Hmmmm, not a great idea. Your lucky you haven't broken the oil pan yet.
All mounts need to be made of the SAME material. If only one or two then somethings gunna break.

I do have some pics. I'll look for them now.

really? I know that if the pan hit the same curb my control arms hit, i wouldnt have a pan. I didnt think that they would all have the be the same. There is infact a very little bit poly around the front bolt as well, but im talking about an 1/8 of an inch. I have the 05/06 upper mount, which is why its not the same as the bottom one, and i would like to put a poly tranny mount in, and i did design a delrim one for that as well, and there is no reason i couldnt use ally in stead. I have only put about 2000 miles on that mount, havnt done much driving this year at all, and only 3 autoxs, with a 4th at the end of the month. Maybe once i get the car running again, i should work on getting the rest of my mounts built so i dont brake the pan. I was under there yesterday, and all looks well in that area, but i did find out that one of the rubber washers i made riped, and is about to fall out. So i should probably update all that stuff while the car is up and the sub frame is out. Thanks for the heads up, will put that stuff on the "next list" after anything associated with the repairs from "the incident with the curb" (which is getting to be quite abit, but mostly upgrades while im at it than repairs).

Talk to you later

im also not even sure when the poly was installed around the bolt, i may have had it in solid to begin with, and then did the poly, and i think that is what i did, and it didnt change anything, then i did the rubber spacers at the mount. Those are probably what have saved me from braking anything.

Thanks again

thanks for the pics, that upper mount looks almost identical to the one i came up with, only with mine, i was going to have a poly pad under the motor bracket, and a piece under the bolt head to eliminitate the noise, but keep it located well. I was thinking, might it not be almost as simple to just make a new tranny mount all together, instead of making inserts? The stockers are aluminum, i can make alluminum one to replace it, I mean, its only that big to accomidate the huge stock bushing, so, a whole new mount makes sense to me. Glad to see im on the right path with the upper mount. Fortunatly, you have an early style mount, i dont, do i would need to mill a couple of flat spots on the side so that i could attach some arms to run back to my shock tower, but it really wouldnt take that much more effort. Long run, its probably the same, because then im done, where you still have to make insterts and what not for the upper part of the upper mount, lol. Again, thanks, and i will let you know what i come up with.

Greg,
Would you be able to get these made again? If so can you let us know who made them and how we can get a set of these? I know that you dont want to start a side business of Motor Mount building but noone out on the market makes them for us to buy off the shelf.:impatient
Thanks in advance.

Robb, yea, I made them myself. Have always thought about offering some of this stuff that I am making for the race car for sale. But, at this time I am too focused on gettin my car done.
Let's see how it goes and maybe I'll consider doing so this fall/winter.
