Drivetrain Any tricks when swapping injectors?
Any tricks when swapping injectors?
Tomorrow I will be changing out my JCW 380's for 400's. I was wondering if there is anything I need to look out for or maybe some helpful tricks? What is the average time it should take me to R&R? I have done them before but that was on my M3.
Thanks
Mario

Mario they are very easy to swap out. just remove the intercooler unbolt the fuel rail pull the clips and unclip the harness to each injector. remember some fuel will drain so make sure the car is cold! and be ready with a small rag.
easy as pie!!

Yes! First time I changed out my injectors was an adventure! I usually do first, then ask later haha Now it only take a matter of minutes...Here are some tips
-Make sure you drain the pressure in the fuel rail (Catch access fuel with a rag)
-blow around the injectors with some air (so crap doesn't fall into the holes when you pull out the old injectors)
-pull off the fuel rail with injectors still attatched
-Lubricate the o-rings on the injectors with some oil
-Install the injectors on the rail first, on my mini I had to use the 1st clip groove on the injectors (to make the injector long) Then make sure all of the injectors seat properly in the manifold (if you put the clips in the wrong position they wont seat properly)
-once your all done, cycle the ingnition a couple times (just to the "ON" position, DONT CRANK) to build up fuel pressure**DO NOT START**...and check for fuel leaks!!! (I know one guy who made a carbeque out of a mini from skipping that step)
All in all a quick process...Give me a call if you need some help -- Johan

Hit me up with a PM if you are interested in selling the JCW injectors!
I am local to you, roughly.

Watch out for the rubber o-rings on the tip of the injectors. i was swapping mine out, and one fell of while removing the injectors. Of course, luck as it be, it was that exact cylinder that was open, so it slipped right past the valves into the cylinder. Took a lot longer than it should have. just to keep an eye out, so you won't have to spend time fishing that little guy out of there.
Hey Mario,
How did it go? What was your base run numbers from last Saturdays tune. I'm curious because of the heat and your new intercooler. Did you pull equal to or close to your 234 number?
At what point did you guys see the need for the bigger injectors?

Hey guys the install went well took about an hour to do because I had to take off the air/water intercooler. If it was an OEM intercooler it would have been much faster. Thank you to everyone that helped me out.
I did dyno my car Saturday in 92F and the car did well, it got 227whp over and over again but I couldn't get enough fuel. Having the cooler temps going into the motor because of the Air/water caused my car to run leaner, thats why I stepped up to the 400cc injectors. I will have to go back to the dyno and with Emil to tweek it for the 400's. I would be very happy with 240whp with a 7600rpm and for the car to do it consistenly. Getting consitent numbers prior to the air/water was a challenge.
I will try and have it retuned soon but even paying for dyno time is money! I never thought I would be driving a $50,000 Mini Cooper :-(
Thanks again for your help

Join the club I have been there for about a year and a half at 200whp at 8000rpm up until I got the RMW head and header. now with a stock tune at 6800rpm I am making 215whp at 100 degree valley heat, and a lot more torque then before so believe me I know how you feel. It's not how much you spend on the car, its what you have that makes the differance. And it will make the 250whp with a few little dialing in modds and a tune. what the hp comes from most of these tunes is coming from a raised rev limit not a tune. and 380's are pleanty for what you have on your car. do you have an a/f gauge?
Good luck.
That is my next mod, I want a round one with the color to match the OEM gauges and a digital read out in the middle. I already have the bung for it but haven't spent too much time researching a/f gauges.

for that design you would want to go with an innovate for 350 to 400 bucks depending on if you wanna data log it and you can change the dial colors.
I'm not saying lean is fine. Me and mario have very similar set ups and with my stock software I am at the 10.5:1 range at WOT with the same injectors he is running. I ment to say that his injectors aren't the problem. He should check and see if he has a vaccum leak if he is having leaning out issues. I always prefer to make a few less hp and have a fat running engine. Richer will give you less power but will make you engine last. Just wanted to set that straight.
