Intercooler advice!!!

Hello,

I know that this has been talked about a lot, but I want to put an intercooler for better cooling and performance. I did some research and I found out that most of the intercoolers are over $500. Technically speaking most intercoolers are the same and function the same. Regular intercoolers from ebay (front mount, not really good for me) are around $200 and up. So my question is: did anyone find an intercooler for MCS that would be a little cheaper, $300-$400?

Thanks!

I haven't found anything in that price range. You do know that the stock IC works very well while being driven (not raced). Only drawback is the heatsoaking it gets while sitting stationery.

If you keep your eyes open on the NAM 'for sale' board, you very well may find someone's slightly used intercooler for your price range. I've see a few M7 DIFCs go in the 500-600 range and I got a great deal on a GRS a few weeks ago for less than that.

What do you expect from an ic that you're not getting now?

doubtful you can find an IC at the price you indicate but ya never know. At this point in time - its pretty clear that the stock one does a good job.

ps - all ICs will heatsoak at a light.

Exactly. I recently ran some tests and found that it holds its own in several important areas, such as recovery time.

The money spent to change to another IC could be spent on things that make a real difference.

That's not to say there aren't better ICs out there. But they're much more expensive.

I am use the Alta Diverter w/ the Watersprayer and seems to work quite well. Dont know what the Air Intake Temps are pre/post-IC but I can tell you when I get home I can put my hand on the post IC side and tell that it is not heat soaked and feels near ambient

I don't have any problems with the stock ic, but I thought that when I put a pully in it would help to cool the supercharger a little more. If I would find a good price on an ic than I would consider to do it, but for the prices that I saw the proportion of money to what the ic is going to do is not really worth it.

FWIW...

Last weekend, I ran two track days at Talladega, AL in substantial heat.

I used my oem IC for the first time in quite a while. In thirteen sessions and on street tires, not one car passed me, and I was able to lap most of them.

The car never felt like it was down on power.

I just have a 15% pulley.

I do have the LDG tune.

So the fear that the oem is somehow compromising the performance of the car is, IMO, overblown (pun intended).

It'll take big money (over $600) to get a better one. The question is, if you have a finite mod budget, is the ic gonna make a real return on your investment, compared to some other mod(s)?

Maybe. And maybe not.

YMMV.

My advice, take it for what it's worth...Stay with the stock unit until you're ready to go BIG...The stock is a great IC with mild mods. -- Johan

I am confused..how would a pulley install would "cool" the supercharger? It is creating hotter air with the 15% then it would w/ the stock pulley.

Thx

When he said "it" he was referring to the IC, not the pulley. The way he worded it was confusing...

I think the 'it' referred to in your quote is the intercooler, not the pulley. As in "...but I thought when I put a pulley in <a larger intercooler> would help cool the supercharger..."

In any case, it would cool the intake charge, but doesn't do anything to reduce the SC temp.
