DFIC install issues

Hello all, has anyone out there done their own install of the DFIC? Maybe not done a great job and had the CEL come on after the first 20 mins of opperation? It ran great for the test run then on the way home the idle went to crap and when i'd lift on the gas it would keep reving like the cruise control was kicking in.

Just me or anyone else?

thanks in advance for the info.

That would be my guess also. I did follow the instructions but It is my first install on this. Anyone out there done it and seen the same thing?

Well, did you check them? Make sure the boots are seated on the horns in the correct direction, because if they are not you will not get a proper seal, resulting in the CEL light and possibly limp-mode. That is what happened to mine when I took my IC off for the first time. Hard lesson learned.

in the correct direction? Please don't tell me that the boots have a left and right orientation. My concern was that the boots are dry when you put them on. Is there a ninja lube besides spit that makes them easier to fit.

After the initial install the test drive went great. it wasn't until the 20 minute drive home that the rough engine started.

thanks again all, I'm looking for "i've done that" advice.

My guess is that one of the boots are not fully seated . If your RPM is floating it is a leak in that area. I 've used natures own spit to assist with the boot installation with great success up to this point. I would reinstall and see how it comes out.

thanks for the help Randy.

I hope you got the M7 boots--they are by far the best (and I've tried them all!) Easy to install and easy to snug down. Never a leak. Experience on this board would suggest the Altas present the greatest fitting problems of all boots.

The M7 boots are not as ridgid to the MiniMaddness I have tried - making install easier yet firm enough to get the job done.

Are you sure it's the actual boots? When you took the stock IC off, did you completely take the screws out from the clamps? If you did, make sure that you have the clamp sections in the correction direction, because if they are not you will not get a good seal, resulting in a leak....which happen to throw me into limp-mode.

If you need the boots they are in stock in blue, red or black for $ 30 a pair.

as longboard said, it was the boot. It had slipped in under negative pressure. I'm still not done with it. I'm going to have to get the stiffer boots. Thanks for the help all. It was just to late last night to mess with it after i got back from the shop.

For me, the most problematic boots to keep the DFIC sealed (as well as to install the DFIC) were the Altas. Too stiff.

Better - and by no small margin - were the m7s. Never had another leak issue when I switched.

You have a point. Obviously the Alta has been satisfactory for you.

However I know of several gifted mechanics who also suffered from Alta IC boot user error. They will no longer recommend them.

I've also had 4 separate ICs and can say unequivocally that - for the average user - whether or not the Alta can be made to work (yes it can and we did it), for the average guy/gal out there, the m7 is far more likely to be easy to install with a high probability of success. Meaning no leaks, and no special tool having to be fabricated.

I ended up getting the M7 boots and never had a problem "with IC connections" again.
