Made my own out of 304 stainless for $20. I had a muffler shop flare the ends for me.

If I decide to install different one like NM or Alta it will be a lot quicker since that PITA torx screw isn't there anymore.

As an extra bonus - I saved a whopping 100 grams in weight.

Has anyone figured out why Mini chose to install the muffler on the intercoolers cold side? It can't be related to sound.

I don't think anyone really knows except for the guy that designed it, probably some summer intern project...hey design this worthless doohickey just don't bother me what ever you do.

I didn't notice a difference in sound.

My guess is the engineer over-engineered it for a purpose, but it didn't quite work out the way it was meant to.

A lot of times, engineers work hard on killing vibrations or sounds, my guess this muffler was designed to quiet down some frequency at a certain RPM that upset grandma in testing.

Kinda like the air intake design. Who the F@#K does not enjoy the sound of that open intake.

"Its too loud.. eeeewww, I don't want to hear anything, I want to live in an insulated Jaguar..."

Hi Guys. I have been researching this for the past week. Would it not be an option to seal off the perforations inside the chamber using a high heat-resistant silicone or epoxy?

I don't know that I would want to risk doing something like that where something could dislodge and get sucked through the intercooler, or worse, into the engine.

I do like the idea of sleeving the factory muffler to retain the stock look for warranty/inspection purposes.

Did anyone try it?

In an earlier post someone cut theirs in half. The diameter necks down in side where the perforations are so if you sleeve it down you would be increasing restriction. Maybe the better way is bore it out, slide if over a straight thru tube. I don't think it will look stock after all of that. Once you are over 70K miles all warranties are over for that kind of stuff, then you mod away.

I've been wanting to do this mod since the day I bought the car. My coolside turbo inlet tube (which by the way is made of plastic) snapped right under the hose clamp on my 09 so I have a Forge silicon hose

on order to avoid this problem form re-occuring. I sure hope they send good instructions because the PCV vent is in a completely different spot on this one. While I am in there I will do the muffler delete. Any reduction in pressure drop has to increase power but I won't get my hopes up too high.

so far this mod had been the most USELESS and most PAINFUL to date. Took me 3 1/2 hours of arm scratching, nuckle banging and for NOTHING I can feel , hear or see.
I felt no gaines, heard no more turbo , nodda, zip.

SO anyone who spent $130 or more for a silicone pipe or fancy alum pipe, I feel you wasted alot of money. I spent $15 on a SS pipe.

Glad to know it made little to no difference. Save me from the difficult task.

You guys who just did it... why do you think you didn't get the power increases the guys back in 2007 did? I think they must have been drinking when they felt the extra power ;-).

We removed mine when we replaced it with the simple forge hose. I'd suggest no power increase and no real difference at all. Just less complex engine bay.

Ditto. I didn't notice a difference, but I love buying mods

Hi guys,

I have installed the straight stainless steel pipe spec as per this forum but it gets rip out whenever i have boost, not sure why. I have restore it to stock and waiting for my samco hoses. 2 more weeks the Samco turbo kit will be here.

You either need better clamps, or the tube needs lips put on the ends to keep tension on the clamps to keep from blowing the hose off the tube.
