Custom tune or canned?

Is it worth the extra expense to go with a custom tune?

A custom tune looks to be about $600.

MTH with cable is about 1/2 that. I've also received other quotes for software only tunes for about $300 too. These are canned though.

My mods are MCS with JCW, Madness CAI, Alta Snorkle, Demon Coil, LiveWires & Engine Dampener.

Thanks folks.

For you until you accumulate more mods I would go with something like MTH. A custom tune would almost be a waste of money until you get some more "extreme" mods...header, cat-back, pulley?, just to name some.

If he has JCW doesnt that mean he has a cat back and pulley?

I have a JCW as well and have been wondering the same thing....

Yeah, that's what I would have thought...Doesn't JCW have a 14% pulley? I might be mistaken though. It obviously has a cat-back.

Get the custom, the I have only heard a few positives from people using MTH. EMIL can raise your idle to be smoother, rev limter, timming, air/fuel and torque management. It will make a word of difference and it will be custom.
my 2 cent.

Hey MarioKart can dyno tuners tune our stock ecu or do they/we need a new ecu or piggyback unit for them to tinker with? Thanks!

the car is running very strong, i'm keeping up with BMW E46 M3's. The only problem I have is breaking belt tensiors and belts, they are only lasting 3 weeks.
On the good side, I put a deposit on a "turbo only" kit!!!!!!

what's with the belt tensioners??? that doesnt sound right regardless of how much power you are making no?? Have you figured out why they are breaking and what's the solution (other than going turbo only)

JCW has 15% pulley, cat back, ported head, fancy ceramic coated IC and I think mine has the 380cc injectors... plus I've added the custom CAI. So yeah, it's got some mods.

Got a quote from Emil and it sounds pretty good, about 2X canned though so I'm just double checking before pulling the trigger. Custom sounds like it's worth it. Probably I'll wait until I do the DT BPV just so I'm not coming back for tweaks.

JCW is not really a 15% pulley it is more like 14%. Anyway, he is probably running the JCW map and I don't know if MTH would give him much more. Besides, MTH is now 400 USD and the cable is 80 so you are only 120 off of the custom if that was a quoted price.

Breaking belts, that might be a slight problem to some people.

Curious about the breaking belts.... Are they shredding or snapping? If shredding, I wonder if your pulley is not aligned properly?

Considering that no two cars will perform exactly the same even stock from the factory, canned tunes are a decent guess at best.

Most people you see touting the gains of a canned tune have probably never done before/after dyno's on their car when putting a new performance part on and merely talk about how great it is because of their "butt dyno" (which is useless).

Custom tunes will optimize tq/hp and a/f curves (along with many other things) for your particular car and are worth the extra money if done by a tuner who knows what they're doing.
