i'm glad somebody is trying this, not all of us can afford the ones that cost over a grand! definetly keep us updated on its reliability or the lack thereof. i jus have a question, not to draw away on the subject, but how does a limited slip work? my car spins both tires when i let it loose, so how exactly does a lsd help when both wheels are already slipping? sorry i,m such a dunse, but i dont really understand everything bout a car.

On I agree that someone is taking one for the team so to speak. Its is ncely priced.

On your wheels spinning if you do not have an LSD only one is spinning. The lsd will transfer and activate the other front wheel.

obx lsd

Is there anything new to report on the obx lsd, I've been thinking about putting one in, but I'm waiting to hear how this one goes first

hey 002- Glad to see you having that car finaly up and running after all the lay off and all the work trying to put it together. I currently have 29k miles on the car so hopefully won't be needing a new clutch and lsd soon. As much as I love to change them I just can't affort to do them now.

By the way I live in San Jose and would love to hook up and check your car. Perhaps exchange our cars for a ride or so.

Wanted to ask you and latte to get together perhaps. I'm somewhat alone among friends here since no one that I know drives or is in to Mini world.

Anyway, shoot me a PM if you care to hook up and drive the cars around in some twisties or just talk Mini.

I'm Sharo by the way.

I will do this mod too.

I have a few questions:

- Do you change the bearings on diff? Where do you get it (do you have any mark for them?)
- Do you change the gasket on the transmission when you open it? Where do you find it again and if you have any mark for it).
- Also I will ask you for the main O ring on the shaft (where is the clutch).

Thanks.

spdfreak,
Everything still works, no suprises yet. The lsd is most noticeable and rewarding when pulling into traffic, freeway on ramps and twisties. I have done a few burnouts, the tires still light up pretty easily, so it is not the answer to launching troubles, but at least the car moves foward. I did blow out the clutch slave cylinder getting ready for the drags, but to be fair it was the 10th full throttle, stomp the clutch shift that night. There is one thing to be aware of when driving with the lsd. Over cooking the front at full throttle will cause serious understeer while cornering, unlike the inside whell spin that allows you to steer with the outside tire. I'm talking tangent understeering here, but that was when pushing way to hard while testing it out.

I'm not so in love with the new clutch, but I think that has more to do with mini's new pressure plate than the disc design.

Blissfull,
Thanks for the pm. I don't do street runs anymore, but I can make time to talk mini's and test drive the cars. I would like to get to the drags, but it may be a while as I am very busy right now and it is way too hot.

fisher,
It is easier to replace the bearings than reuse them. You can get them at napa autoparts or a vendor like detroit tuned. There aren't any marks, the bearings press up to the diff case. That is what I did and it fit right in. You should check the clearance to be safe. There isn't a transmission case gasket, sealant is used. I did not replace the input shaft seal, but you can get them from mini. There is a thread by khuevo that has great info about this mod.

002- would a reliable shop that knows what it's doing be able to install the OBX LSD in the car properly and with good fitment as u have stated? Reason I'm asking, I'm not a mechanic and from what you have stated here it seems as if the install has some tricks to it if I got that right. So, therefore, I'm assuming a reputable shop would have to be able to do this mod to it's perfction for no future problems. Is this a correct assesement?

I saw that you are going to see Danny at MINI Corsa, he would also be able to do an LSD.

I'm actualy going to see Danny and Jan for some tunning and mod parts to optomize my car's potential. I will do my LSD when the clutch needs to be replaced. The car has 29k right now so I'm assuming that I'm good for at least another 30k or so.

I think by the time Im done spending on the car I would have been able to get a 911 porsche.

Glad to hear of an OBX LSD success story. Maybe when it comes time to replacing my clutch, I may just add one of these.

This is great advise. This is something I do with most assemblies before an install. Make sure = not sorry later

OBX LSD

I am not native to this group but have been involved with hundreds of OBX LSD installs with people on other forums. The overall performance of the LSD has surpassed almost everyone's expectations.

However, I strongly feel that the belleville washers in these units need to be replaced in order to make them a more reliable unit. They come with some really low grade high carbon washers that sometimes even arrive cracked. The bolts are also sometimes overtorqued so they should be considered for replacement if stripped at all.

This is probably the best OBX product but it still needs to be given a once over before being installed.

The bolts and washers are cheap to replace and are great insurance against a broken diff and tranny.

Here is a link to my rebuild writeup: http://rbryant.freeshell.org/obx_rebuild

This thread makes me LOL.

The OBX is just like the 19%. You have people bashing it non stop and how poor of a decision it is and reporting all the problems others have had with, when in fact near every unit has been flawless.

Thanks for going through with it. If I ever upgrade diffs, this will be the perfect one to bring in all the extra power my 19% pulley makes.
