What about this polisher?

What about this polisher?

I found this and though it looked like a pretty good deal. Any thoughts?

Good Deal

My question is, what do I do about pads? Can I buy ANY 7'' pads? I'm working on a porsche pretty soon that is swirled more than you will EVER believe. The owner washes it with dawn soap, an old crusty wash mit, and drys it with a regular old shop towel.

Also, should I but some of the Prima products, or is there something I can buy at O'rilley auto parts that will be just as good?

Thanks

I don't think that's random orbital, which is what you would definitely want. This looks like a sander/polisher alright, but doesn't look like a random orbital polisher. That would be dangerous...

Go to Lowe's and see if you can get either the PC 7336 or the 7424 on clearance.

Ah... now I know what *I* sounded like when I first got here. Seriously - I asked the exact same questions.

I agree with Wanna - that looks like a rotary. Unless you're a pro, rotary = bad. Dangerous. Hard to use. Capable of great results, but do it wrong and you're looking at a few hundred bucks minimum for a re-paint job. Qwert - ypu've been around though, haven't you? I agree that this looks like a cheap-o unit though, and I'd not risk a Porche with any hardware I wasn't 100% certain about.

If anyone's reading this that's new to deailing: I'm just editing a document on the differences between a rotary and a RO polisher - Heather at DP and OctaneGuy are both providing edits so it should be very complete. Wait fior that article to buy something, seriosly (hopefully we can get the forum moderator to sticky it).

The extra money you spend on a quality polisher is WELL worth it. Buy from someone like Detailers Paradise or any other NAM merchant and you have access to good bundle offers with pads and chemicals, as well as a lifetime warranty, backed by a company that will stick around and support you.

honestly, i would buy these pc's and stuff from DP.

there's a starter's package bundle, right? just get that. then you're
all set, you dont have to worry about getting backing plates and pads
all in bits and pieces, etc. from different stores wat not.

order once, and you're ready to go. that's kinda nice if you asked me.

NOooooo, qwertmonkey should buy this polisher and whatever off the shelf polishes he can find. It's really good! What an excellent price! I mean, what better way to practice on an $80,000 car than with a polisher you've never used before, and you don't even have the first clue about what system you should use??

You know what the outcome of this situation will be??

The Porsche owner will either call a professional like me, praying I can fix the horrible damage you caused, or worse, you will be held liable for a $15,000+ paint job. And then he will swear that nobody will ever touch his baby again with a machine polisher!

This post was made with some sarcasm of course because I cringe when I hear about people who haven't the faintest idea about using a machine tool want to practice on a high dollar car for their very first time. It's a recipe for disaster.

Get a Porter Cable polisher--spend the $140 to buy it, practice with it, choose a system---Meguiars, Prima, Zaino, whatever---but stick with it, and master it, then go work on a customers car. Your customer will appreciate this and so will you.

Jeesh Richard... for a second there I thought you were serious in that first sentence and I almost had a heart attack! I thought maybe you had a bad fever and it had gone to your head.

Seriously though, I agree with OctaneGuy.
