Stupid mistake, bumper pays price

So I am in the process of leaving my home last night, pulling out of the garage, when my door opener drops on the passenger side ground while trying to remove a cd from the head unit. As I pick it up, I must have pressed the button, closing the garage door, because the next thing I know, I am backing straight into the CLOSED DOOR. I noticed just a second too late, and paniced to pull forward. As a result, a bolt in the door hardware make an indentation just right of center on the bumper face. i am so irrated at myself, even thought it was a pretty honest mistake, and will cringe everytime I see this eraser sized hole punch witha slight dent surrounding it.

Any ideas on fixing this aside from having the whole bumper removed and resprayed (which I am considering).

Spray paint a plastic cap the same color as your bumper, insert it in the hole, and it will look just like a back-up sensor. Let the guy who rear ends you next time buy the new bumper for you.

Expect to pay close to $500 for a bumper respray.
Had a similar problem, but I got bumped by someone, and the body shop est was $550. Insurance paid. I'm not sure I would have paid from my pocket based on the damage.

I called my dealer yesterday and they quoted me $300 for a respray. I did not mention there would be some need for a repair as well. I know a guy who does excellent work on the side that I supposed I will have to call about this if I can't work on it myself.

i would push it out the slight dent first, then put spot bondo, sand it,
and touch it up. if it turns out like crap, then try the plug. especially
on a pensil erasier sized hole not worth a repaint, imho.

It's a puncture in the rubber bumper, not a metal dent that can be pulled out. Get a plug from the website mentioned above and drill a hole in the "indentation that will accept the plug.

I wouldnt ever use Bondo for anything other than minor surface leveling.

For filling a low spot more than 1/64th of an inch deep, I would use Duraglass.

We "tore" our bumper and someone with the right color who had put an aero kit saw my post and offered the bumper cover for $200. SOLD!
I suggest if you want, at least post a note on ext mods and see if someone has a cover in the right color. Can't hurt to ask.

No one has picked up that you must be a multitasking contortionist!!

You were backing out of your garage (imagine one hand on the wheel, and neck cranked around to look out back), but somehow the passenger door or window was open so your remote fell out because you were trying to remove a CD from the head unit---while backing out and looking back????? But somehow you or an object pressed the button and closed the door without you knowing?

I could see why you were so proccupied that you didn't know your garage door was closed. But its hard to understand, unless you have a silent garage door, that you didn't hear it close...doesn't your door make quite a racket when it closes???

Ok, sorry for that diversion, just sounds like a lot of distractions--good thing you were only parked!

You've got a Jet Black bumper. You should have an easier time getting the JB to match--be glad you don't have a metallic! I would remove the bumper cover--simple 15 minute or less operation.

Then see if I could push the plastic back out, then look at the options of what remains. Like others have said, used bumper covers are available, though much fewer for Jet Black since it's a discontinued color. You will likely want to get it filled and resprayed--if its in the dead center, it shouldn't be too expensive to fix.

Good luck!

I backed into a two-three foot high metal pole sticking out of the ground. I put a hole about the size of a quarter in the bumper cover. I just found a guy that was selling a bumper the same color as my Dobby! So I am just going to take the old one off, scrap it, and put the new one on!!

Don't scrap it if you got the space! The bumper covers make good test beds for touch up paint practice, sanding/buffing practice, and even trim tests on the black trim areas. I've got a Silk Green and Indy Blue Cooper covers in my yard.

Haha, wait I also got a set of Autocross wheels and tires and a silk green boot hatch, and that's only the beginning! Fortunately it's all on the side of my house, so it can't be seen.

If I was your neighbor, I would complain incessantly. I'd be really pissed off about every little thing you did "wrong". I'd make you feel SO bad, you'd offer me a free detailing just to shut me up.

There is an even better way to irk me.

Just leave bird crap on your paint, and tons of swirls and leave the wheels and paint filthy, and it'll make me cringe and gasp in horror every day!

Sorry, no can do. My OCD would kick in and I'd clean off the bird crap long before you would see it. I'd break out in hives if I had dirty wheels, too !

Nope, I'd have to find other ways to motivate you.

That's not a bad idea! I can use that as my practice...
