Cleaning Wheels

My Wife has a BMW 325i.

Her wheels are 5-spoke 'Sports Pack' ones, and until recently they looked like new.

Last weekend I cleaned her car and found that I simply could not get the wheels clean, no mater what I tried.

She took it to a car wash a couple of weeks ago, and whatever they use on the tires has combined with the brake dust kickde up in her normal (ie fast) driving to coat the wheels in a random black/grey mess.

I have tried

Car Shampoo and a sponge
Dawn and another sponge
Dawn and a wheel brush
Dawn and a cloth (neat)
Honda Motorcycle cleaner
Purple-Power de-greaser
Clay (partly successful but tedious)

plus various paint scrubs and cleaners.

I am really looking for a spray-on, wash off solution.....

Any ideas ?

Oh - I called the carwash and they said that they use a silicone based spray on the tires and they had never heard of any issues, then went on to blame my wife for using her brakes excessively ?????

Thats the stuff I used and I got it from Detailer's Paradise. I took my wheels off and cleaned front AND back, and it took some work to get everything off them. I have 20k mi and two years on them and with a bit of scrubbing with a no-scratch dish sponge, it all came off. I then applied a coat of Epic wax and now everything slides off. Prob do it again in the spring.

Good luck!

Try this

http://www.detailersparadise.com/Vie...-122521261408#

It may take a little scrubbing from the sound if it. But this is usually a spary on spray off type cleaner.

after your done coat it with a good protectant like Rejex

I had that problem with my original white S-Lites.

A friend that had a car detailing business stopped by and spent a little time trying to remove those pesky black spots.

Tried a lot of different products from his professional detailing supplies and ended up using Meguiar's #83 I believe. It is slightly more abrasive than Scratch X. It takes some elbow grease, but the stuff finally came off.

I recommend 100% getting a natural boar's bristle brush for weekly cleaning (or wheenver you wash, I wash weekly it seems) Griot's has a fantastic short handled one that is verty soft and the bristles are long. It cleans off my wheels with mild griot's wheel cleaner really well. You should do what octaneguy recommends and use quick detailer after you use your car on the rims. It made my wheels look day 1 from day 1. Theres not a bit of anything on them normally, they gleam.

bling.

long handle is better. the short handle sprays your face & arms & legs
with the brake dust contaminated soapy water.

Have you tried Simple Green? I've used it to get some very bad crud off my wheels.

^^ yah, during my last oil change on the Legacy i accidentally dripped
some oil when i was transferring old oil into my recycle container.

I wetted down the driveway and sprayed SG liberally... waited about 2min
agitated with a deck brush, and hosed off.

It all depends on what you have. But I'm guessing whatever you have is baked in, which may not be possible to remove.

Simple green will get off anything grease-based (tar for example).
P21S/a good wheel cleaner will remove brake dust.

Both should be allowed to soak for 5 minutes and then need some scrubbing.

But baked in brake dust and paint stains are going nowhere.
At that point you might want to try a Mr. Clean Magic Sponge. It is abrasive, so not a good idea to use regularly. But perfect for that end-of-season cleanup.

But it may be in the paint, and you have nothing you can do but a repaint. This is why it is important to clean the wheels with P21S/a good wheel cleaner regularly, so nothing is there long enough to bake in.

I have used P21S for a few years now and swear by the stuff. It works wonders on your wheels and saves the knees and back.

I think the P21S is good stuff too, but expensive. In my mind an ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure. Get them clean, put a good synthetic wax on them and then keep them clean. There's my $0.02!
