Wheel Care

I'm just about out of Turtle Wax 2001 Foaming Wheel Cleaner and looking for a change. What's your favorite brand?

Does it remove hardened brake dust in the crevices?

Allowing as how one should not let it build up to begin with, how DO you get rid of that calcified crap?

my dad thought it was crap when he saw a stand with someone showing what "wonders" it did to all kinds of finishes. So he handed over a part of his own, and was amazed with the results. Dad bought a can of it, and then came home and showed me what it did.

OMG that stuff is awesome. Especially on steel... took off rust with a little rub. Not like a pressure rub, just wipe over the surface!

i buy the wheel stuff from the bmw/mini dealership. when i have caked on brake dust it takes it right off. wet the wheels down, spray the stuff on and let it sit for a minute or two.

when i do my regular cleaning though, i use an OXO wheel brush with water and it takes it right off. other brushes i have used don't perform as well. i tried the new mcguires brush, but it's not as good as the OXO.

PS21 is by far the most effective and safest wheel cleaner I have ever used.

Many work well. The Mothers brands are acid based so they clean best but be sure to use on a cool wheel and rinse, rinse, rinse!

The Sonus Rim Brite is my favorite because it's ph balanced just like P21S and a better value, IMO. It's not as strong as the acid based cleaners but that's usually not an issue for an obsessive-compulsive cleaner like me.

You have to be careful with most wheel cleaners. Almost all you find in a normal store are not safe for paint. And these days most rims are painted.

P21S is available in many specialize car care and aftermarket companies.

I have a bottle of Sonus Rim Bright as well but switching between that and P21S, I can't conclusively find one better than the other. The rim bright seems to foam a bit more, so better for sitting and leaving for a while, but I also seem to use much more of it faster.

I too have used Turtle Wax Foaming wheel cleaner for a number of years and have been satisfied with the results. The last time out I decided to try something new...I had been happy with Meguire's products and saw their Gold Class All Wheel Cleaner and although I have only used it once I can see it definately cuts the dryed on dust faster, but I always use a brush anyway.

Mothers

I agree with BradB, Mothers is a pretty strong product and I only use it if I have not cleaned the wheels in awhile. I have the SSR GT1's and they are real easy to clean with just soap and water. I don't have chrome or anything, so since I wash it once a week they never get to out of hand. Sometimes using brissel (sp?) to get in the nooks and crannies helps just get the dirt out.
