My Perfect Wax? Help Me Find It?
Brad, thanks for really great info and a great site at Autopia
I have all the Zaino products you've recommended, and love using them, except I want a darker finish on my Dark Silver MCS. You've said you can use Caruba over Klasse all in one, but can I use it over Zaino?
If so, I'm thinking of doing it like this--please correct me as needed!
1) Dawn wash
2) claybar
3) Dawn wash
4) Z5
5) Z6
6) Z2 w/ accelerator
7) Z6
8) repeat a couple of times (3max in one day...)
HERE: if I can't get 2 or 3 coats done in a day, (I don't have a garage) do I wash with Zaino wash before starting another Z2/accelerator application?
Top with Carnuba...thinking P21s....do I put this on top of the Z6, or skip that and put this directly on Z2? And do I put only one coat of carnuba, or more?
Can I Z6 on top of carnuba?
Being an out door car, if the carnuba wears off in 30-60 days, can I do a Zaino wash and repeat Carnuba? If the weather is too bad, can I just Zaino wash and not put on a new coat? Does the Zaino wash remove the Carnuba, or do I have to strip down with Dawn and start all over
(that's not gonna happen alot)...
I'm not meticulous, but want to provide protection for my car that won't fail if I don't keep up the waxing on schedule, especially in winter....but I'm not happy with the light coloration of Zaino on my car...
Thanks for any input...
Jenni

Jenni,
The Zaino Base and P21S Carnauba topper combo is an interesting combo. Some thoughts on your process:
1. Dawn wash at step #1 or #3. But no need to do it twice. You want to do this as infrequently as possible because it is a harsh process. Necessary, but only required once. I would prefer to see yoiu do it at step #1 only. (I claybar with Z7 as my lube)
2. ZFX (the accellorator) can be used with Z5 as well as Z2, you know. And if you are going to bother with Z5 you might as well do two coats of it. Personally, I generally just use Z2, provided you have a swirl free finish to start.
3. I always prefer to wash the car with Z7 (your step #3) before the application of any set of coats of wax.
4. If you start a new waxing session another day, then yes, be sure to wash the car first with Z7 and wipe down with Z6.
..................
NOW.....If you begin to top the car with P21S this changes the chemistry of things from here on.......
5. You can put the P21S on top of the last coat of Z2 with no problem.
6. Z6, however, would now probably no longer be my first choice as a quick detailer. I would choose a quick detailer with a heavy concentration of carnauba. This will maintain the deep look and depth you are wanting out of the P21S. Z6 polymer chemicals will not mix well with the carnauba in the P21S. I suggest either Sonus Carnauba Quick Detailer or EF Clear Pearl. Both are great.
7. P21S doesn't layer so only one coat.
8. Zaino Z7 car wash is pretty strong and will not completely remove it but will degrade carnaubas somewhat. I would suggest using P21S Carnauba or Meguiars Gold Class shampoo which are gentle washes.
9. You don't have to strip the P21S when it starts to degrade (which it will in a month or so of outdoor storage) you can just re-apply over the existing coat. What I would do is spot-clay the finish using the auto shampoo (Meguiars or P21S) while washing prior to waxing so you are not sealing in any debris and the new wax touch-up job comes out slick and smooth.

Awesome instructions--I can definitely follow that--thanks:smile:
I have a few weeks on my last wax, and with luck of the weather and the work schedule, I'll get to try this combo. Better order my stuff now! Thanks again for your immediate and thoughtful reply--you ARE a detail guy

After applying Carnauba wax, then I start with the Sonus Quick Detailer? (I'm in California--the EF Clear Pearl can't be shipped here
)If I decided to just get one of the Sonus packages (Klasse w/ Sonus quick detailer and carnauba wax) , would you recommend the shine package (for metallics) or the souveran (for dark cars)? I'm more interested in a deep rich velvety color from my dark silver (light metallic) car, but I wasn't sure if the sourveran was intended for it or not...

Yes, after applying carnauba start using the Sonus QD.
Don't get a Sonus package with Klasse. You have Zaino as a base. (I assumed you already had it.) Why use Klasse? (Klasse is an acrylic polymer. Zaino is a polymer, too.) Klasse is very good, but I prefer Zaino.
Souveran is an excellent carnauba and will produce a great shine, very deep and rich. I didn't mention it right off because of the expense and lack of durability compared to P21S. But for looks, it's fantastic. It's specifically formulated to work best with darker paints. I have some and like it a lot. I have often used it on black, blue and red cars. Would likely work well on dark silver as well giving it a slight hue change. It's a subtle difference.
