Need advice on roof dent repair + named my mini today.

I got my 03 MCS a couple weeks ago, and did not name it until today. I followed NAM members advice and let the name come to me. So, on my way to meet another NAM member this morning, I was listening to Hey You by Pink Floyd and felt Floyd was the perfect name for my little guy. Once I get it tidy'd up I will post pics.

Now here is where I need advice. On my way this morning, a stupid lorry spit up a big *** rock and it hit the top above my windshield. Pics are below. It didn't make a massive dent, but it scratched it down to the bare metal!

Is this repairable? If so, can it be done without making my car look like ***.

Thanks all.

Yeouch! That was one nasty rock. My best suggestion is to ask about this over in the Detailing 101 sub-forum... the folks there are the ones really in the know for keeping up appearences with MINIs, so they would probably be the ones to suggest a fix for this.

You should have gotten a plate number off the truck. They do this often and will pay for the damages (at least here in the US).

One option would be to use body fill, make it smooth and paint the top over. It should not be a bad match so no one will know, but it will cost money.

A second option would be to fill so it is perfectly level, then instead of paint, get a roof graphic. This will be cheaper I think and you might be able to customize your ride at the same time.

Great advice from HRM.

Bondo and repaint or Bondo and Roof Decal.

I'd go with the latter if you don't have a sunroof.

Mmmmm...Bondo smells so good before it dries.

Thanks guys for your replies. I don't want to go with a roof decal, even though that sounds cool. I like my sunroof to be clear.

Is bondo the only way to go with this? From my experiences, bondo cracks after awhile. I live in Arizona, so it gets pretty hot here. I am willing to spend upwards of a $700 to have this back to how it was before it happened. Is there a better alternative that may cost more?

Thanks all!

Moved it for you, and I made the title more descriptive to hopefully draw in some knowledge.

I had a dent on my roof from a road sign... don't ask. But anyway, it was fixed for about $800. Not sure how, really. The spot has the same acoustic knock as the surrounding metal. My guess is no bondo, but some kind of dent puller. Five years later and it is still good, so if it was bondo, it hasn't cracked. Plus $800 is a little steep for just bondo.

Well, the receipt is missing and I don't remember anything beyond the figure.

I've removed door dings with dry ice and a heat gun (a hair drier will do) on my 03 Carrera 4s. Got the idea from someone else in that forum. Your dent is a lot bigger but who knows, it may work too

This is the link to the article, but you may need to register

Good PDR technicians can do a "glue pull" where they basically pull the dent out by using hot glue sticks attached to the panel. This only works with factory paint however, so as long as the roof hasn't been repainted this could be done.

I think I can get my PDR tool under there from the side of the car (door open pull down ceiling a tad), use suction leverage from the roof, if the sunroof motor is not in the way.

I would push it out, touch up, sand it flat, and apply roof vinyl.
