Using a carnuba with a Porter Cable... "fling"

So I have been tinkering with my 7424XP and a red pad, applying my S100 via the Porter Cable vs by hand with a mf pad. The problem I have, which really isn't a problem, is how to apply the S100 to the pad without getting a ton of "fling" while applying the wax.

The look of the paint after I buff the wax is friggin amazing, so I am willing to deal with it, but I am just wondering if anyone has any ideas on a better process?

And no, I am not going to switch to BG.

Well let's see now. Your main problem is that you aren't asking the right question.

Carnaubas come in liquid and paste form.

So your question is really...How do I use a PC with a carnauba paste wax?
The answer is pretty simple.

You don't. Sorry to burst your bubble, but there are reasons why we use liquid products with machine polishers. Most of the time, trying to get the product out of a can or from an applicator onto the foam buffing pad just isn't worth the trouble.

But if you really want to do it, you're going to have to find a way to get your pad into the can, and swirl it around so that it generates some enough heat to soften the wax. As you do this, it will build up on the pad. Now you can put that on your buffer, and hope that going through all that effort is even worth it.

As for switching to BG? It wouldn't help in your case because it's a hand applied product. It would make no sense to suggest something that isn't even compatible with the PC now would it?

When I do carnauba wax I do it by hand - no pad, just hand. Since natural waxes melt your body heat helps it spread (it's also why carnauba doesn't last, especially in Colorado).

I don't know if you've ever tried this, but I've wet polished carnauba with a PC. That is, I did the carnauba by hand and wiped it off. Then I went over it with a PC and a very soft pad..red or black, with a teeny bit of distilled water. On the carnaubas I've tried, this results in a sharp improvement in gloss and for Nanoskin, is intended to offer a bit more durability. Course, this wouldn't do much for the Colorado sun..just another technique to pass on.

By hand, hmm, never thought of that. Might give it a try.

With regards to using a PC and a paste wax, I got the idea from here. http://www.autogeek.net/car-wax-detailing.html

In short, you can, and people do. The reason I wanted to try this was because UPS decided to be slow on delivering a new shipment of detailing goodies, and I needed to redo the MINI this weekend for a show, so I thought I would give it a shot. To be honest, it works a lot better than I thought it would.

I did notice that the S100 looked great using the PC on the 4.5 setting, but I was getting that fling I spoke of. Ken's right, just gonna have to slow her down a bit.

And holy crap, MINIMaybee is right, good carnubas don't last here. Big change from when we lived in Hawaii! (1 month or so in Hawaii, MAYBE 2 - 3 weeks here)

Yes, it's actually quite amazing how much the intensity of and proximity to the sun here at elevation affects the durability of carnaubas! Kinda sad because I enjoy applying carnaubas more than I do a synthetic (unless I'm in a rush of course!). I like to apply it by hand (assuming it's a nice consistency like the P21S/S100 carnaubas!) because it's more therapeutic and enjoyable for me.

Alas, I rarely use carnaubas anymore here in Colorado. I love the 300 days of sun here most of the time... it's just too bad it's so harsh for our carnaubas.

I am not a pro, but when I apply paste with a Porter Cable style machine/pad.

I do it by taking a small amount of the paste out container with a plastic spatula.

Then smear it in the center of the pad.

Then place the pad on the surface to be waxed.

Then start the machine slowly (bump the triger if necessary to keep the speed slow) .

Then move the machine slow to spread the wax on the pad and surface of the car.

Hey Hmmm...Have you tried Collinite #915 carnauba? It's not quite as easy to use as S100 but will last much longer...you could top it with S100.

well, the last real world test i did Griot's best of show vs Prima Epic a few
years ago, both lasted about the same on a daily driver parked outdoors 24/7.
which i think was about 3months.

so this thing about carnauba's not lasting long... im not convinced.
