I'm overwhelmed... I just want to wash my car...
Auto Butler?
We recently bought a VW and the dealership has the Auto Butler paint protection system. It is supposed to be applied every 6 mos. It really makes the car gorgeous. I'll be buying a mini in the next month or two and I'm doing a lot of research on options, maintenance, etc., and I too am concerned about protecting the paint. Do any of you have an opinion on using Auto Butler for our Minis?

Well based on their website, I grabbed these quotes:

"To protect your paint and appearance we professionally complete two important steps. The surface to be treated must be prepared for the paint protection by first removing any dirt, or industrial contaminants. This is accomplished with a high-grade cleaner/polish. Next, the paint protection is applied to protect the original paint against degradation caused by environmental hazards and UV radiation."
"You should also be aware that a vehicle that has been protected with paint protector is easier to clean and maintain."
"While Auto Butler Paint Protection seals and protects the painted surface, it does not prevent it from getting dirty or affected by industrial contaminants. What it does do, however, is provide a protective barrier that can be cleaned and restored time after time. Auto Butler will send you a reminder card inviting you to return to your dealership to have this process reapplied every 6 months for the life of your warranty."
How much does this service cost?
When we take care of our paint, we don't just polish the paint, we clay it first to remove any bonded contaminants. Polish only won't thoroughly clean the paint. It needs to be clayed first.
I haven't seen the finish up from one of these machines, but in general, dealership washes and details are pretty crappy. If it improves the quality that's great, but I can see that after a few times, those cloth buffing wheels aren't going to be so soft--say you're the 100th car that's run through it for the day. Products like this are designed for dealerships to make more money, not to help you take better care of your paint.
You're a lot better off, buying a few products and doing it yourself, IMO.
