PC vs pin-striping?

Question: Porter Cables and pin-striping... My '92 (which I'll be Swirl-ing tomorrow) has a pinstripe job... Avoid it or what?

Just a guess, but why not run some painter's tape over it? The closer the width to that of the pinstripe the better.

I had that thought, but I'm worried that even painter's tape would pull the striping off on removal... It's not painted - it's the tape stuff.

My hibiscus stripes are kind of tricky too, with all the tiny pointed edges. I'd been taping them off - first stick the tape to your jeans, then pull it off and put on the stripes, no pressure on the actual stripe but just at the edge of the tape on the paint.

But then during my last detail I decided to do a small test spot during the wax step and.... no lifting of the vinyl at all! Plus the added bonus of the PC/wax getting rid of the tape line that is left after polishing.

Good luck!

put a dash of flour over the pin stripe and then painter's tape it.

Hmm...if you were REALLY afraid (like if they seem super delicate) you could tent over them with paper then tape the edges of the paper down.

Maybe try a test spot and see how it goes?

I like the stripes and decal though! Really cool.

Yeah, I was thinking test spot first... Although de-glued painter's tape looking promising. I can just make it fuzzy on my jeans and that should take the worst of the "bite" out of the adhesive... I'm sure that waxing won't be a problem with the PC - but I'm not sure if Swirl will damage them or not. Worst case I could remove them, but I like them too...

Matt, 3M now makes a blue tape that is for delicate surfaces only. I'm confident that you won't have any problems with that tape as we are using it to tape off recently applied decals and stripping in our finish process area. In Columbus the Sherwin-Williams stores carry it.

Tested it on the stripes and they were fine... It was pretty shiny before - now after a claying and a session with Swirl on the RO polisher, it's like some sort of liquid... Sexy!

Onc coat of Epic is on the car now - I'll put a second coat on tonight and remove the cured left-overs in the morning.

Make sure you let the first coat cure for 24 hours before you put on the 2nd coat!

Looks hot!

nono..deep fry to a nice toasty brown.

it's amazing how some of you guys don't know how to use flour (or baby
powder) as part of your garage tools. i use it when checking clearance
issues (ie: strutbar to engine liner, tire rubbage on fender liner, etc) and
also when needing to lower the adhesive strength of masking tape...
ie: taping over interior bits that might have very soft paint that actually
discolor when tape is removed, over pin stripes, etc.

:impatient

and you thought this was some kind of joke? geeez ..
