A serious question about rain
Rain water is distilled water; it is formed through a process of evaporation and condensation.

I can believe it picks up crap in falling but I hever had water spots from rain. I have from the sprinkler. But still, the question is ...

So what? Don't these people WASH their cars?
Sometimes you see high end cars for sale saying "never driven in rain".
yah, it's a pita to clean under the bonnet... not worth my time either.

i dont even look at the engine room on my commuters. so filthy.
I'm just curious about the rain thing cause I see no point in having something you cant use because your afraid of the rain
Sometimes I think of clearbra the same way as ppl who used to put plastic on their sofas so the sofa dont get dirty. When do you take the plastic off and actually enjoy the real sofa (or car). What is the point of having a fine car if your afraid to get it dirty. Most of them are MEANT to be driven, including in the winter.

You spend your money then drive it however and in whatever you want. But actually questioning why someone would not drive in the rain or snow is just as ridiculous as you not understanding why. To list a car as never driven in the rain is music to car crazies ear's....if it just a tool to you that is fine, but it just might be more than that to others.
"Most of them are MEANT to be driven, including in the winter." Which one do you think will last longer, the one that is in the garage or in the salt 180 days a year?
No offence, but now I know why I do not visit NAM anymore.
it's because of chows?

but he's only one member out of tens of thousands. who cares i say,
just have fun here.
I read this elsewhere and thought I'd ask here.
I was looking for opinions, but if you want to attack me for asking for opinions, I guess its a free country

Yes DUDE, coming from the snow belt I understand people get beaters to drive in the winter

I'm not. See my original post above ... looking for opinions. I ... my opinion, I can see it for TRUE collectibles ... cars that are not new and still worth $100K up.
I can't see it for current production vehicles. That's just my opinion.

And it's a sorta free country (IMO).Is there a formula for new cars, like, if it costs over $X it shall not see rain? Or production number. I remember seeing a Pinto that was as perfect as a p.o.s. can be selling for a healthy amount, just because all the other Pintos blew up or something.
Hi Chowsie! In collector speak around here, a car never driven in the rain is expected to be spotless on the underside. There are places under the car that you can't ever clean like original after being sprayed with a good dose of road spray. I've only seen a few real "never driven in the rain" cars in my life and they were P wagons (and they were spotless, top to bottom). Some of the inspection stamps used at the factory are water based ink/paint and some part tags are paper. Both degrade pretty quickly when driven in the rain. So, if COMPLETE originality are of concern, driving in the rain is not a good thing.
If I ever get a P wagon again, it WILL be driven in the rain and the underside will be fuzzy. woohoo.

There are pollutants in the air. When it rains these pollutants get deposited on everything including vehicles. A couple of years ago red clay dust from Texas got deposited on vehicles here in Chicago when it had rained. It turned any vehicles sitting outside a nice red.<snip>
If Mr. Pep'r doesn't visit NAM because he gets pissed off about someone asking a question, then we are all better off for his lack of visits.
What's in rain?
http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/ASK/rain2.html
Lots of stuff besides water depending on where you live.
Yes, lots of road grime and junk that increases corrosion on your car.
Ever take a look at your brakes and rotors after drying off after rain?
I get waterspots all the time from rain, usually mixed with dirt.
Usually it rains here daily.
Also once the body gets dirty and needs cleaning then you need to carefully clean the surface and that puts it more at risk for damage due to repeated cleaning (scratches).

I heard one response that Ferrari test drives ALL their cars at the factory in all weather except ice. I know PAG has schools in the US for driving the C4s on snow.
I guess there is a legitimate reason, especially for concours ... but like you said ... I don't think I have to worry about it at the moment ... although I aint been out in ice (not going to happen if I can help it), I figure all that other stuff you mentions is LONG gone

Thanks!
When I visit my other forums I am a member of they just do not seem to get get my blood boiling like NAM does. I have stopped making new posts and reading the threads other than 'Detailing 101' and our local Mini Club thread
Just like the post LynnEl made is what I am talking about, where is the fun in that? And remember last time I had fun with a post involving cleaning products and heath? I am not seeing the fun in these types of postings.
But thats fine, it's cool, I got the real answer.

And Ken, he's so high how Hydro now he's buying the stuff by the gallon so you can't always tell if he's been sniffing the stuff or not
