Beware: A typo when headed for the Detailers Paradise site & you'll end up elsewhere!
Just an FYI for any of you who are Detailers Paradise fans out there...
It's our own fault for not registering variations on our name, but jeesh... it seems to me like this could have been intended as a way for them to try to trick our customers when they typo our name. It's not like we haven't "known" each other as competitors in this industry for many years now.
So, I just wanted to inform you all in case you think we just changed our website look or something. In fact, we did not! If it doesn't look like the Detailers Paradise website, then it isn't. You may have accidentally left out the "s" in our name when you typed our web address.

We just discovered that a competitor of ours called Chemical Guys (a blender/private labeler of some well-known car care enthusiast brands out there, as well as a retailer of other car care products/tools) registered the domain name:
www.detailerparadise.com
(just like our website address, minus the "s" in the middle)
and they have recently started to link it directly to their Chemical Guys website.
So, you can still access their website with their regular website address, but now you can also access it through this variation on our company name.

Isn't it obvious, and with over 18K posts you should be on the Internet enough that you've seen this before. It is a very common marketing practice to register websites to catch users who mistype. Sometimes it's by a competitor but more often it's by any web business trying to catch some traffic. I'm sure all the mistype combinations of yahoo, google and other popular sites have been spoken for.
When I first saw "Beware" in the thread title I thought a mistype might lead you to a **** site
. Actually very common!

Ok just thinking outloud after 2 martinis but are the Chemical Guys not... the same folks who manufacture my beloved Smart Carwash? & thus the same as Autopia? (I already know Smart=Autopia) I mean you guys know I am a freak for my Smart Carwash that those guys make but if they have stooped so low as to try to trick people into thinking they are also Detailer's Paradise that just infuriates me. I guess I do not expect a public reply to my question but I would appreciate a PM from anyone (& the message author will be kept private when I confront) who knows because I have soooo supported Smart/Autopia & I intend to confront them on Monday morning if this is true

Aww, that would make me sad...because I *do* like Autopia for a couple of things I can't get locally or from DP.
Oh well. I also really like Autogeek and they have pretty much all the same stuff...

It is my understanding that the Chemical Guys are based in Inglewood and make products for a number of companies. I don't know if they make the Smart products for Autopia Car Care or not--they might. There is a company called Adam's Polishes which also sells Chemical Guy products under their name. I wouldn't lump the companies that use the CG to private label their products as having anything to do with this domain copying thing. I don't think David Bynon had anything to do with registering this domain--though I haven't looked into it--upon first glance, this is something restricted to CG.
Btw, don't believe everything you read on the forums. I read yesterday on Autopia that my Black Wow was a rebadged Auto Brite product. I confronted the poster and corrected him.
Btw, Heather--I'm sorry about this. Maybe we can make a domain called ChemicalJerks.com or ChemicalGuysNot.com and rip on them! =) Mods, this was a joke, don't want to be breaking any NAM rules here.

Check the whois... The same address of 3732 West Century Blvd is used for the owner of David Bynon websites & the "detailerparadisewebsite". I think that confirms what has happened. David Bynon=Autopia=Sonus=Chemical Guys but guess what... he should not have tried to screw over one of us Detailers (with an s) Paradise.
All I gotta say is if you hunt around with all the info that has been given you will easily find plenty of phone numbers (well one main one) to call & you can express your displeasure like I did. I am in no way condoning threats or harassment but I think there is nothing wrong with expressing your feelings & I am sorry but after reviewing the website owner(s) addresses it is clear that Sonus=David Bynon=Smart=Chemical Guys. Stuff may be hidden away in the future but I have seen that they are the same person today & I have no respect for a man that would try to scam people into thinking he is Detailer's Paradise

Sounds similar to cyber squating to me. I know people have gotten into legal troubles for similar things but typically the offending URL leads to a **** or similar site and often times the URL that was typed incorrectly was supposed to go to something like Disney, The Whitehouse or Britney Spears.
If you have a lawyer, it probably wouldn't hurt to talk to him/her. Granted, there may not be anything you can do about it but it never hurts to find out.

Whoa Nellie!
I would not jump to the conclusion that David Bynon has anything to do with this. From anything we can tell, he does not. We haven't been able to find any address match in domain name info with David Bynon nor his sites.
I know it says the "non-DP" (s-less) website is registered to Smart Inc but it does not seem to have anything to do with the SmartWax line. The only common element is the state of California. California is a big state. I don't know who is aligned with who there, but there is no evidence that I've seen myself that links Bynon/Autopia to Chemical Guys. Chemical Guys do produce and private label a number of brands out there but either way I don't see any evidence that this website issue has any direct link to Bynon/Autopia.
So, please do not target David Bynon and/or Autopia for this. We don't have any info that supports any involvement.
That said though, thanks so much for the defense! We really appreciate all the support.
Most importantly, please help us spread the word so our customers (and potential customers) don't accidentally end up on the wrong site when they intended to land in the real Detailers Paradise.
