Planning - MINI run/meet in North (western) VA

Just to get on the board,
I am planning a run out near my neck of the woods, I've been enjoying all the nice country and mountain drives that this area has to offer and I'd like to share (just a little, you understand) some of my favorites.

I'm a new member, but basically, I know what I need to do, and If I have questions I'll be sure to ask. I don't want to run-over anyone elses plans, or ideas. I heard that someone was either planning this or wanted to, (Maxicooper or MINI-Bee?) If you have any ideas or tips, please let me know.

I'll be mapping this out and sending it for blessings (to the most honorable event coordinator) within the next few weeks.

Most likely so far:
Around 100 Miles
Coffee, IceCream, or the best bacon burgers in the universe (mebbe all 3)
Terriffic Scenery
National Park
Wineries
Longhorns ?
Twisties

Stay Tuned . . .

Just PM either me or Jay to see when on the calendar you want to do this. Sounds like a great run
Nope you aren't stepping on anyone's toes. This is what I was talking about..I want to see MORE people come up with some great runs and roll with it. Believe me, plan it and MINIs will come!

Once I know whats going on with me (Court and what not) I am hoping to set up a route north into PA. I've done a fun run up there a few times with no actual route, but I do want to put together something definate in the future.

WINO - Leave the corkscrew @ home, (unless you have one on your keychain or something) we probably won't be stopping for this trip, although i'll check it out. Second thought - bring the corkscrew.

I know this is difficult to determine yet, but how many MINIs do you plan for in an event like this? For the Coffee in Arlington, there were probably a dozen or so MINIs, (& a Mini), many more at the breakfast @ MoS. I have already been asked, (& guessed 15-20) how many to expect - what do you plan for?

Plan for anywhere between 10-40. Last year for MINIs by the bay we had about 40 cars. Depending on the timing, and the route, we may have a bunch. My best advice would be look for a restaurant with a good parking lot. We can always double park the MINIs!

Craig, it's awesome to see you taking the initiative to set up a new run. We've built quite an impressive list of runs to lean on each year... but new ones are ALWAYS welcome! Viva la variety!

Great job!

I just took a ride yesterday in your neck of the woods (sorta)...I met my father in Harrisonburg to do the "kid exchange for a visit with grandparents" and then took 211 through Luray and over to Warrenton. What a fun ride in my new (to me) baby!

I did that drive on friday night on my way to Skyland, added just a little to the usual excitement
The drive down Skyline was great on saturday, I gotta post some shots from the drive.

Next up: The Blue Ridge Parkway, bottom to top

Hi rj, another relatively new person here in northern VA. Your idea sounds great! I love driving around Shenandoah, but haven't gotten out there since converting to motoring. Keep us in the loop!

Thanks, and question for those interested.

Quick question of a general nature:

During events like this, what is the general feeling about
a short few miles of um . . . unpaved roads?
a decent road, just without, you know . . . the asphalt.
Now I care about my MINI, I traveled on it today,
sunroof open, no dust to speak of, all cool.
However, some folks might not agree, and I'll respect that.

So what'll it be?: Bring it. (or) Not in my MINI!

The only problem with unpaved roads is....for those of us who are lowered we may bottom out and you will get NOT IN MY MINI from them (us included) Keeping it to paved roads is probably best if you can avoid them dirt things.

We ran on something like that during the St Paddy's run last month. A little rough for street-only suspension. But what the heck, I'll go for it anyway.

To avoid the risk of disenfranchising those of us
who have chosen the lowered lifestyle,
we'll skip it.

I led a few runs out that way in years past. Lots of fun!! Although, I'm still grieving over the closing of the Sunnyside Farms Rest Stop...

I had lots of fun a month or so back though when I ran up 211 crossing Skyline Drive! Oooh, and we ended up taking a quick break stopping off at the hedge maze set up just outside Luray Caverns!

Would the unpaved roads you're thinking of leading us on take us to a certain lookout by any chance? I led a run where we did that, and aside for a few dusty MINIs, everyone seemed to make it up and down fine!

Anyway, if you want to see the route sheets of runs I did previously, I'll dig them up and post them online!

Paul,

We won't be on 211 this time, a more northern route and I'm trying to stay
off roads that are busy, (and straight). I would be interested in that
previous route though, sounds like it'd be a fun ride.

The dirt road is Route 613 (Panhandle Road) SW of Front Royal. No big deal,
I was trying not to backtrack and this was the only option but the overlap
is only a few miles. We'll stay clean this time.

A bit of a route hint - We'll be on VA Routes :647, 635, 522, 649, 613, 340,
619, 678, 675, 55, and 11. Crossing Fauquier, Warren, and Shenandoah
Counties and maybe some of Page Co.

Craig,

Definitely in for participating and helping you any way I can. My in-laws are building a horse farm in Amissville, so I'm out that way quite a bit on weekends, and sometimes during the week. Let me know what I can do to help if you need it. This sounds like a great run you are planning

Actually jdor1, April 14th, or 28th is being batted around - it will likely be one of those dates (28th my guess). I'll post the route plans as soon as we settle on a date. But we could do this again - fall is a good time, or whenever - I love driving around out here anyway, do it all the time - company would be cool anytime.

Hope you can make it -

Craig
